John Bishop Manchester, a boy of sixteen, finds himself confronted with a rather adult situation at a very young and fragile point in his life. He has lived with his mother in the beautiful town of Norfolk, Virginia for the majority life and is unaware of his father's exsistance. When a pile of old secrets finds itself falling upon his mother's library floor, he flees in search of the man he would soon call his father. John finds himself in route along, with his mountain man of an uncle by the name of Frederick Manchester, to the Lexington, South Carolina tobacco plantation. Soon after his arrival, John realizes that the time to mature had come sooner than he had anticipated and finds himself in a very hostile situation. Life has finally reared its nasty head up at him and now he must take accountability for his mistakes and responsibility for the ones he holds dear. He soon finds himself traveling west in the company of a runaway slave by the name of James, two rambunctious irish brothers, and his faithful horse named Old Hickory. Not to mention a band of angry overseers who pursue their every move, led by a ruthless man by the name of Simon Monroe. In the American wild west, John will find that growing up will come natural when exposed to the unpredictability of this untamed land.

Don T Stop Me If You Ve Heard This Before written by Peter Turchi and has been published by Trinity University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-24 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In (Don’t) Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Before, Peter Turchi combines personal narrative and close reading of a wide range of stories and novels to reveal how writers create the fiction that matters to us. Building on his much-loved Maps of the Imagination: The Writer as Cartographer, Turchi leads readers and writers to an understanding of how the intricate mechanics of storytelling—including shifts in characters’ authority, the subtle manipulation of images, careful attention to point of view, the strategic release of information, and even digressing from the (apparent) story—can create powerful effects. Using examples from Dickens, Chekhov, and Salinger, and Twain to more contemporary writers including Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, E. L. Doctorow, Jenny Erpenbeck, Adam Johnson, Mohsin Hamid, Jai Chakrabarti, Yoko Ogawa, Richard Powers, Deborah Eisenberg, Olga Tokarczuk, Rachel Cusk, and Colson Whitehead, Turchi offers illuminating insights into the inner workings of fiction as well as practical advice for writers looking to explore their craft from a fresh angle beyond the fundamentals of character and setting, plot, and scene. While these essays draw from decades of teaching undergraduate and graduate students, they also speak to writers working on their own. In “Out of the Workshop, into the Laboratory,” Turchi discusses how anyone can make the most of discussions of stories or novels in progress, and in “Reading Like a Writer” he provides guidelines for learning from writing you admire. Perhaps best of all, these essays by a writer the Houston Chronicle has called “one of the country’s foremost thinkers on the art of writing” are as entertaining as they are edifying, always reminding us of the power and pleasure of storytelling.

She and her biographer were both real-life Scarlett O'Haras. Born to privilege and wealth in antebellum Virginia, she married at seventeen and then was plunged into the events of the American Civil War. Myrta Lockett Avary was her biographer and though Avary does not give up her friend's identity, the story captured the imagination of the world when first published in 1903. Avary also wrote "Dixie After the War," which may have been the inspiration for Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind." She was also the original editor of "A Diary from Dixie as written by Mary Boykin Chestnut," featured very prominently in Ken Burns' documentary, The Civil War. A write for major periodicals during her day, Myrta Avary was a successful and well-known writer. We're fortunate that she chronicled the world that was left behind in the wake of the Civil War. "The narrative is one that both interests and charms. The beginning of the end of the long and desperate struggle is unusually well told, and now the survivors lived during the last days of the fading Confederacy forms a vivid picture of those distressful times.”—Baltimore Herald. “The style of the narrative is attractively informal and chatty. Its pathos is that of simplicity. It throws upon a cruel period of our national career a side-light, bringing out tender and softening interests too little visible in the pages of formal history.”—New York World. “This is a tale that will appeal to every Southern man and woman, and can not fail to be of interest to every reader. It is-as fresh and vivacious, even in dealing with dark days, as the young soul that underwent the hardships of a most cruel war."—Louisville Courier-Journal. “Taken at this time, when the years have buried all resentment, dulled all sorrows, and brought new generations to the scenes, a work of this kind can not fail of value just as it can not fail in interest. Official history moves with two great strides to permit of the smaller, more intimate events; fiction lacks the realistic, powerful appeal of actuality; such works as this must be depended upon to fill in the unoccupied interstices, to show us just what were the lives of those who were in this conflict or who lived in the midst of it without being able actively to participate in it. And of this type 'A Virginia Girl in the Civil War ' is a truly admirable example.”—Philadelphia Record.
