Aber wie genau gestalten sich diese Rezeptionsstrategien? Wie war das gedruckte Notenmaterial beschaffen, auf dem sie beruhten, und auf welche Weise wurden sie in den begleitenden historischen Periodika und in der Literatur bewertet? Diesen und anderen Fragen geht die Autorin durch ihre multiperspektivischen Betrachtungen auf den Grund: So vereint sie die Untersuchung von 309 bis 1850 erschienenen Kammermusikversionen, welche in einer digitalen Online-Tabelle zusammengefasst sind, mit einer qualitativen Bewertung einzelner Ausgaben, für welche Schriften von E.T.A. Hoffmann, Ludwig Rellstab und Robert Schumann herangezogen werden. This volume gives innovative insights in music historiography since it can depict that the earliest form of the adaptation of »Don Giovanni« by a wide audience was a chamber music adaptation. However, how are these reception strategies designed? How were the original printed note materials and how were they valued in the accompanied historical periodicals and literature? The author answers these and other questions with the help of her multi-perspective methods. Thus, she links the analysis of chamber music versions dated from 309 until 1850, summarised in a digital online-table, with a qualitative evaluation of several issues, by referring to writings from E.T.A. Hoffmann, Ludwig Rellstab and Robert Schumann.

This Element considers the art and culture of arranging music in Europe in the period 1780–1830, using Haydn's London symphonies and Mozart's operas as its principal examples. The degree to which musical arrangements shaped the social, musical, and ideological landscape in this era deserves further attention. This Element focuses on Vienna, and an important era in the culture of arrangements in which they were widely and variously cultivated, and in which canon formation and the conception of musical works underwent crucial development. Piano transcriptions (for two hands, four hands, and two pianos) became ever more prominent, completely taking over the field after 1850. For various reasons, principal composers of the era under consideration, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, participated directly in the practice of arrangement. Motivations to produce arrangements included learning the art of composition, getting one's name known more widely, financial gain, and pedagogical aims.

Hans Ernst Weidinger, Entrepreneur in alter Familientradition, Philanthrop und Mäzen, Sänger, Schauspieler, Dramaturg und Regisseur, Theater- und Kulturhistoriker. 1986 inszeniert er in Regensburg Don Giovanni, 1987 begründet er das Don Juan Archiv, nach Abschluß der 16-bändigen Dissertation zu dieser Oper (Wien 2002) macht er 2007 seine Sammlung als theater- und kulturwissenschaftliches Forschungsinstitut Don Juan Archiv Wien öffentlich zugänglich. Ferner gründet er die Redaktion Tagbau, das Stvdivm fæsvlanvm und den Hollitzer Verlag. Diese Studie folgt Lorenzo da Pontes Notiz auf dem Titelblatt des Don Giovanni in seiner Sammlung der Tre Drammi (New York 1826), wo der Autor schreibt, die Oper sei komponiert "da lui per le Nozze del Principe Antonio di Sassonia — Colla Principessa M. Teresa Figlia dell' Impr. Leopoldo". H. E. Weidinger geht der Frage nach, welche Konsequenzen die Annahme einer angekündigten, doch letztlich nicht realisierten Hochzeitsaufführung in Prag für diese Oper hätte. Anhand von Briefen, Archivquellen und Zeitungsberichten wird so ein völlig neues Licht auf die Entstehungsgeschichte des Don Giovanni geworfen.
