The Soldier Vote tells the story of how Americans in the armed forces gained the right to vote while away from home. The ability for deployed military personnel to cast a ballot was difficult and often vociferously resisted by politicians of both political parties. While progress has been made, significant challenges remain. Using newly obtained data about the military voter, The Soldier Vote challenges some widely held views about the nature of the military vote and how service personnel vote.

The War Of 1812 A Short History written by Donald R. Hickey and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-30 with History categories.

This abridged edition of Donald R. Hickey's comprehensive and authoritative The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict has been thoroughly revised for the 200th anniversary of the historic conflict. A myth-shattering study that will inform and entertain students and general readers alike, The War of 1812: A Short History explores the military, diplomatic, and domestic history of our second war with Great Britain, bringing the study up to date with recent scholarship on all aspects of the war, from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. With new information on military operations, logistics, and the use and capabilities of weaponry, The War of 1812: A Short History explains how the war promoted American nationalism, reinforced the notion of manifest destiny, stimulated peacetime defense spending, and enhanced America's reputation abroad. Hickey also concludes that the war sparked bloody conflicts between pro-war Republican and anti-war Federalist neighbors, dealt a crippling blow to the independence and treaty rights of American Indians, and solidified the United States' antipathy toward the British. Ideal for students and history buffs, this special edition includes selected illustrations, maps, a chronology of major events during the war, and a list of suggested further reading.

Donald Hankey was a writer who saw himself as a ‘student of human nature’ and peacetime Edwardian Britain as a society at war with itself. Wounded in a murderous daylight infantry charge near Ypres, Hankey began sending despatches to The Spectator from hospital in 1915. Trench life, wrote Hankey, taught that ‘the gentleman’ is a type not a social class. In one calm, humane, eyewitness report after another under the byline ‘A Student in Arms’, Hankey revealed how the civilian volunteers of Kitchener’s Army, many with little stake in Edwardian society, put their betters to shame nonetheless. A runaway best-seller on both sides of the Atlantic, Hankey’s prose vied in popularity with the poetry of Rupert Brooke. After he was killed on the Somme in another daylight infantry charge, Hankey joined Brooke as an international symbol of promise foregone. British propaganda backed publication in the-then neutral United States, yet at home Hankey had to dodge the censors to tell the truth as he saw it. This, the first scholarly biography, has been made possible by the recovery of Hankey papers long thought lost. Dr Davies traces the life of an Edwardian rebel from privileged birth into a banking dynasty that had owned slaves to spokesman for the ordinary man who, when put to the test of battle, proves to be not-so-ordinary. This study of Hankey’s life, writing and vast audience - military and civilian - enlarges our understanding of how throughout the English-speaking world people managed to fight or endure a war for which little had prepared them.

Early reviews of DONALD'S STORY: "The book is wonderful. Sandra Merrill has achieved the remarkable task of telling three stories at once...Donald & his family then, her experience of rediscovery now, & the overall history of the 4th Fighter Group in WWII. I was moved many times & I salute her for it."--Jeffrey L. Ethell, Aviation Writer & Author of numerous military histories. "Fantastic work. Very moving. Fascinating & unusual. There are scores of WWII stories but the hook for this one is the way (the author) fell into uncovering it. This book transcends typical WWII accounts & exploration of family histories...I really believe she has created something unique & universally appealing. Very impressive."--Gary Bruggemann, WWII Historian & Educator. "The idea intrigued me from the outset: Fifty years after the death of a fighter pilot during WWII, on Christmas Day 1944, his niece resolves to write a book memorializing his life & death. I could hardly wait to read it. I had been an instructor & fighter pilot myself, & had read many books written by others in this very unique profession. But how would a niece view this fraternity? The book was worth the wait...I saw my own innocence, hope, pride, patriotism & supreme effort as the author's uncle progressed from farm to heroic action in the greatest of all wars. I will admit tears were in my eyes as the author visited his gravesite in Holland."--James L. Brewer, author of MULES, MISSILES & MEN. The Story Of World War Ii written by Donald L. Miller and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-08 with History categories.

Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought—and whose outcome was in greater doubt—than readers might imagine. This is the war that Americans at the home front would have read about had they had access to the previously censored testimony of the soldiers on which Miller builds his gripping narrative. Miller covers the entire war—on land, at sea, and in the air—and provides new coverage of the brutal island fighting in the Pacific, the bomber war over Europe, the liberation of the death camps, and the contributions of African Americans and other minorities. He concludes with a suspenseful, never-before-told story of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, based on interviews with the men who flew the mission that ended the war.
