El terreno, claro está, no es virgen: lo rastreó ya, entre otros, Marcel Mauss, que llegó a la conclusión de que el hecho de que se devuelvan las cosas donadas se debe a que en éstas existe un espíritu que las impulsa a volver a las manos de su donador original. La perspectiva general adoptada por Godelier, en cambio, renueva profundamente nuestra comprensión del don y analiza las cosas que se donan o las que se venden a partir de las cosas que ni se donan ni se venden, las cosas que se conservan y que se deben conservar, sobre todo los objetos sagrados. Reanalizando las prácticas del potlach y del kula, en las que se había basado Mauss, demuestra que los enigmas a los que se enfrentó este último desaparecen cuando se comprende que es perfectamente posible donar un objeto y a la vez conservarlo. Lo que se dona es el derecho de usarlo en otros dones; lo que se conserva es la propiedad, la inalienabilidad. Pero aún hay que explicar por qué se aplica esta regla a los objetos preciosos que se donan y no a los objetos sagrados que se conservan. La cosa se aclara cuando aparece aquello que está oculto en el objeto: lo imaginario asociado al poder. Resulta, entonces, que toda sociedad contiene en sí misma dos tipos de realidades: algunas de ellas, sujetas al intercambio, a los dones y al mercado, constituyen los puntos de referencia necesarios para que las otras circulen. Y precisamente esta redefición de los anclajes fundamentales del hecho social constituye la tarea principal del pensamiento político actual.
