Donna Summer was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and she was only 19 when she flew to Munich, Germany, to appear in the German production of the controversial musical, Hair. Donna went on to appear in several other stage shows, including Porgy And Bess and Godspell, before she sang a few songs for a producer who was looking for new voices: Giorgio Moroder. However, it wasn't until early 1975 that Donna came up with the one line that would change her life: 'I'd love to love you.' Moroder immediately had Donna cut what she thought was a three minute demo of Love To Love You, which he took to the MIDEM music festival. Here he met Neil Bogart, founder and owner of Casablanca Records, who liked the demo so much he took it home with him and played it at a party - over and over again, such was the demand. After sitting on the demo for a while, Bogart contacted Moroder - and asked for an extended, twenty minute version of the song. And Bogart insisted the only person who could sing the song was whoever had sung the demo. So Love To Love You Baby was born - and Donna was on her way to becoming an international superstar. This is the story of Donna and her music...

When it comes to earthshaking songs—the ones that signal a tectonic shift in the current musical landscape—there is “Johnny B. Goode” . . . there is “Good Vibrations” . . . and there is "I Feel Love." A disco touchstone recorded by Donna Summer in 1976 and released on her fifth studio album, I Remember Yesterday, in 1977, "I Feel Love" is one of the most important records in music history, and one of the most influential. "I Feel Love" topped charts the world over—including in the UK, Australia, France, Italy, and the Netherlands—and was in the Top 10 everywhere else. This record, Brian Eno told David Bowie as they worked together in the recording studio, "is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years." Which, said Bowie, "was more or less right." Except fifteen years was an under-estimation. Even now, more than forty years after its release, "I Feel Love" is routinely featured toward the top of manifold "greatest song" Top 100s—and remains a favorite by music fans and artists alike, with dozens of cover versions paying homage. That is the tale this book tells—not only the story of the song but also the story of its all-pervading impact upon the world of popular music. Firsthand experiences and original interviews with a host of musicians, disc jockeys, and dancers loudly illustrate the record's initial impact and its continuing influence. "I Feel Love" still sounds like the future.

Donna Summer seemingly rose from nowhere to become the Queen of Disco in the Seventies. She recorded the sexy song that could only be played after midnight, "Love to Love You, Baby" and became an overnight success. There was a smoldering sexuality about Donna Summer that the record companies constantly tried to exploit. But, Donna just wanted to a simple God-fearing girl. Her life was not without its trials, but Donna was at the top of her game in the Seventies and the Eighties. When disco fell out of favor, she switched to a more rock and roll format and just kept going. Winner of Grammys and American Music Awards, she hit the Top 40 twenty times. She had several number one hits, like the iconic "MacArthur Park," "Bad Girls," and "Hot Stuff."All the Legends of Rock & Roll books are essentially biographies, but I am interested primarily in the music. You'll find that the emphasis is on the music, how it came to be, who wrote it and performed it and any juicy tidbits about any given song or album. If you're a fan of Donna Summer or of disco or enjoy the music of the Seventies and Eighties, scroll up and buy now. You will enjoy it.
