This title was first published in 2003. This book provides a much-needed comprehensive and up-to-date treatise on financial distress modelling. Since many of the challenges facing researchers of financial distress can only be addressed by a totally new research design and modelling methodology, this book concentrates on extending the potential for bankruptcy analysis from single-equation modelling to multi-equation analysis. Essentially, the work provides an innovative new approach by comparing each firm with itself over time rather than testing specific hypotheses or improving predictive and classificatory accuracy. Added to this new design, a whole new methodology - or way of modelling the process - is applied in the form of a family of models of which the traditional single equation logit or MDA models is just a special case. Preliminary two-equation and three-equation models are presented and tested in the final chapters as a taste of things to come. The groundwork for a full treatise on these sorts of multi-equation systems is laid for further study - this family of models could be used as a basis for more specific applications to different industries and to test hypotheses concerning influential variables to bankruptcy risk.

Entry will occur most rapidly in a market where entrants incur few or no sunk costs, do not operate at a cost disadvantage, and where consumers can easily switch from the incumbent to the entrant. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the speed of entry in an in industry that is highly contestable, taxi rides. In recent years, firms like Uber have entered the transportation business offering a ride service that competes with the traditional yellow cab service. Uber drivers have a lower cost structure than the incumbents, sunk costs are minimal, and they are able to enter the market knowing that the incumbent's price is sticky downwards due to municipal regulations. These industry attributes have led many an observer to comment that the rents or profits earned driving a yellow cab will quickly wither away, or stated differently, the yellow taxis have little long-term market power. Despite these favorable entry conditions, I use capital market data to show that taxi operators have been betting that market power will persist for well over fifteen years.

International competition has severely hit the Italian textile-apparel (TA) industry, causing reductions in the number of firms, revenues, value added, export and employment. Small firms, even those located in historical and well established districts like Prato and Biella, have suffered the most, going out of business at an unprecedented rate. This trend has prompted a crowd of scholars, practitioners and policy makers to conclude that industrial districts will disappear and that small firms are doomed to death in global mature industries like TA. But a closer and more rigorous look at the data and facts behind this general picture reveals a more articulated situation with wide variation in small firms' performance and significant differences in the strategies that they have come up with to survive, and, in some cases, to thrive. Using data from the Italian Ministry of the Economy annual industry revenue survey (Studi di Settore), we apply multiple correspondence analysis and cluster analysis to a sample of almost 30,000 small Italian textile-apparel firms to map this variation of small firms' performance onto the business models they have adopted. Using the structural business variables contained in the survey, we identify 9 business models in textiles, 4 in finishing and 12 in apparel. Some of them (those characterized by internationalization, investment in technology and skills, move up scale in the market) are associated with higher productivity and innovation, while the others lead to decline. These business models provide an interesting diagnostic and predicting tool for business practitioners and policy makers who believe small firms in mature industries can still play an important role in the economy and wish to support them as they strive to compete globally.
