En esta edición se publican dos textos significativos de una característica principal del método de investigación de Walter Benjamin. Este método inauguró un nuevo estilo de análisis multidisciplinario que conecta filosofía, estética, sociología y teoría literaria, anticipando e inspirando los planteamientos más novedosos del análisis de textos de la segunda mitad del siglo xx. En el ensayo sobre «Las afinidades electivas» de Goethe (1919-1922), Benjamin se plantea, entre otras cuestiones teóricas, la relación entre biografía y crítica literaria, y dice de él que intentó «realizar la idea de iluminar una obra completamente desde ella misma». El artículo biográfico «Goethe» (1926) está enfocado desde las condiciones históricas y sociales del sujeto. En el conjunto de los estudios de Benjamin este texto ocupa un lugar excepcional, ya que él consideraba que escribir una biografía era una tarea imposible. La presente edición incluye también los apuntes previos de Benjamin para estos dos textos, que permiten apreciar el riguroso estilo de trabajo y toda la génesis de estos ensayos en su conexión con interesantes aspectos biográficos del autor.
