A obra, derivada de dissertação de mestrado de mesmo título e autoria, aborda a trajetória episcopal de Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira com ênfase na marcante contribuição deste importante bispo católico à educação superior no Estado de Goiás. Em cinco capítulos, o autor, em modo historiográfico, discorre sobre: 1) as diretrizes que a Igreja Católica, por meio do Papa Pio XI na encíclica Divini Illius Magistri, dava sobre a educação no início do século XX (Capítulo I); 2) o ensino superior católico no Brasil nos períodos colonial e imperial, e na República até 1950 (Capítulo II); 3) a atuação efetiva de Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira (liderança religiosa e personalidade) no crescimento da educação superior em Goiás, apresentando os vários desafios (financeiros, administrativos, infra estruturais, de escassez de quadros para a diocese, expansão do protestantismo) enfrentados pelo religioso, e o seu comando da consolidação do projeto de restauração da Igreja Católica no Estado, tendo a promoção da educação superior sido adotada como ação estratégica institucional central (Capítulo III); 4) a criação dos primeiros cursos superiores em Goiás, a fundação da Santa Casa de Misericórdia e o embate entre franciscanos e salesianos na gestação da educação católica em Anápolis, localidade com forte presença da educação protestante (Capítulo IV), e 5) as principais ações e acontecimentos liderados por Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira que repercutiram no crescimento definitivo e consolidação da educação superior no Estado de Goiás, culminando com a criação da Universidade Católica de Goiás em 1959, quatro anos após seu falecimento (Capítulo V). Em texto com redação clara e consistente, o autor aborda seu objeto de modo profundo e bem fundamentado, com apuro técnico e metodológico. As lacunas existentes no registro histórico do substancial legado de Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira à educação goiana, em especial à educação superior, encontram pleno preenchimento no conteúdo de destacada qualificação que pode ser lido em “Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira e a Educação Superior Católica em Goiás (1923 - 1955)”. This is a detailed study of British influence in Brazil as a theme within the larger story of modernization. The British were involved at key points in the initial stages of modernization. Their hold upon the import-export economy tended to slow down industrialization, and there were other areas in which their presence acted as a brake upon Brazilian modernization. But the British also fostered change. British railways provided primary stimulus to the growth of coffee exports, and since the British did not monopolize coffee production, a large proportion of the profits remained in Brazilian hands for other uses. Furthermore, the burgeoning coffee economy shattered traditional economic, social and political relationships, opening up the way for other areas of growth. The British role was not confined to economic development. They also contributed to the growth of 'a modern world-view'. Spencerianism and the idea of progress, for instance, were not exotic and meaningless imports, but an integral part of the transformation Brazil was experiencing.

In The Private Science of Louis Pasteur, Gerald Geison has written a controversial biography that finally penetrates the secrecy that has surrounded much of this legendary scientist's laboratory work. Geison uses Pasteur's laboratory notebooks, made available only recently, and his published papers to present a rich and full account of some of the most famous episodes in the history of science and their darker sides--for example, Pasteur's rush to develop the rabies vaccine and the human risks his haste entailed. The discrepancies between the public record and the "private science" of Louis Pasteur tell us as much about the man as they do about the highly competitive and political world he learned to master. Although experimental ingenuity served Pasteur well, he also owed much of his success to the polemical virtuosity and political savvy that won him unprecedented financial support from the French state during the late nineteenth century.
