Excerpt from Douglas, Lincoln and the Nebraska Bill Let me anticipate by the reminder that the alleged offense of Douglas in the Nebraska compromise lay in substituting this interdiction of nature for the positive, but as Clay pointed out, temporary interdiction of a law of congress, known as the first, or Missouri, compromise. Excerpt from Senator Stephen A. Douglas and the Germans in 1854 With the passage of the Kansas - Nebraska bill in 1854 Stephen A. Douglas reached the zenith of his power and fame. In the shocks and storms of that momentous struggle his picturesque and potent character stood forth triumphant. His victory, however was the beginning of the end of his influence; for it let loose the cosmic forces in opposition that co-ordinated and concentrated in the person of Abraham Lincoln, who rived and sundered his strength and finally overwhelmed him and drove the guardians of slavery from the seats of authority. In the time at my disposal I wish to deal with Some of the rela tions of the Germans to the storm of opposition that suddenly darkened the political heavens in January, 1854, and culminated and broke with terrific force upon the head of Senator Douglas because of his part. In the introduction and passage of the Nebraska bill that worked the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. It is not my purpose to discuss the pros and cons of Senator Doug las' bill or his course in respect of the Missouri Compromise, or his character or consistency as a statesman, or the justice of the conduct of the Germans in regard to the Nebraska bill and its author. What the Germans did, why and how they acted, and the consequences to Douglas and to themselves - these constitute my objectives. Even thus limited, it is obvious that only a general outline of the chief events and a sum mary of major facts are feasible if the objectives contemplated are compassed. Excerpt from Lincoln: The Man and the Statesman Acquaintance with the lives of great men and women is one of the best means of setting right ideals and developing good character. Lincoln's young soul was infused with the life of Washing ton. This sympathetic sketch cannot fail to lead to admiration of Lincoln as a man, and admira tion usually leads to imitation. On the other hand, the young student can, in this brief story, get a clear idea of the real issues be tween the North and the South, through the study of the kansas-nebraska Act, the Dred Scott case, the lincoln-douglas debates, the question of State Rights, and the Thirteenth Amendment. Excerpt from Lincoln-Douglas Debate American history, reveals human nature deal= ing with momentous problems, and illuminates the methods by which the great art of public speech is used to influence public conduct in a great epoch. Because Lincoln and Douglas, in the course of the debate, each made references to their past records, it is necessary to have in mind the brief sketch, here given, of the life history of each. And because the debate was on the questions of slavery, and referred so frequently to the history of that question, it is necessary to here give first a very brief review of at least those facts, in the history of slavery, to which the speakers refer. The speakers inferred that their hearers had fresh in memory the recent history of slavery agitation and legislation, and, accordingly, we here offer a narration of such facts as are necessary to understand the mean ing of the debate, before giving the debate it self. Therefore, this volume presents, first, a brief sketch of each debater, just sufficient to under stand the references in the debate; second, just enough of the history of the slavery question to comprehend the allusions of the speakers; third, the circumstances attending the debate along with the chief arguments and replies of each speaker; fourth, the major and important portions of the speeches of Lincoln and of Doug las are given in the exact words of the speaker. Excerpt from The Lincoln and Douglas Debates: An Address Before the Chicago Historical Society, February 17, 1914 The subject of this lecture is the Lincoln and Douglas debates. These debates took place in the year 1858. They grew out of the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. Doubt less some of you know what the Missouri Compromise was and others do not. It is best that all should know, since without such knowledge the debates themselves would have little meaning for you. Fifty-six years have passed since those debates took place. One hundred and ten years have passed since President Jefferson bought Louisiana from Napoleon Bonaparte. Missouri Territory was a part of the Louisiana Purchase. Without that purchase there would have been no Missouri Compromise, and no repeal of it in 1854, and no Lincoln and Douglas debates on account thereof. But there was a remoter and deeper cause for that encounter. President Jefferson might have bought Louisiana with its vast hinterland, and his successors might have carved Missouri out of it and admitted her to the Union as a state, without any disturbance, had not African slavery existed in this country. That direful curse was ingrafted upon us in the year 1619 at Jamestown, Virginia, where a Dutch warship, short of provisions, exchanged fourteen negroes for a supply thereof. Few persons of the present day realize how shocking a condition of society slavery was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Life of Abraham Lincoln: His Early History, Political Career, Speeches in and Out of Congress Gentlemen, only a few more words as to this alliance. For my part, I have to say, that whether there be such an alliance, depends, so far as I know, upon what may be a right defini tion of the tei'm alliance. If for the Republican party to see the other great party to among themselves, and not be glad of it - if that is an I am in; but if it is meant to be said that the Republicans had formed an alliance going beyond that, by which there is contribution of money or sacrifice Of principle on the one side or the other, so far as the Republican party is concerned, if there be any such thing, I protest that I neither know any thing of'it, nor do I believe it. I will, however, say - as I think this branch of the argument is lugged in - I would before I leave it, state, for the benefit Of those concerned, that one of those same Buchanan men did once tell inc of an argument that he made for his opposition to Judge Douglas. He said that a friend of our Senator Douglas had been talking to him, and had among other things said to him Why, you don't _want to beat Douglas? Yes, said he I do want to beat him, and I will tell you why. I believe his original Nebraska Bill was right in the abstract, but it was wrong in the time that it was brought forward. It was wrong in the application to a Territory in regard to which the question had been settled; it Was brought forward at a time when nobody asked him it Was tendered to the South when the South had not asked for it.
