A filosofia do século XVII, nas suas versões racionalista e empirista, com o corte que fazem entre qualidades primárias e secundárias, não podia ver as cores como problema do pensamento. A natureza pouco misteriosa das cores era perfeitamente analisável no campo da Física ou da Óptica. Já no século XVIII, com Hume, as cores parecem constituir-se numa bizarra exceção às leis associativas que constroem o mundo da experiência. E, em nosso século, Witt genstein chegará à ideia (incompreensível do ponto de vista clássico) de uma lógica das cores. Nessa história da concepção das cores, a Doutrina de Goethe, (a que o leitor brasileiro tem agora acesso na tradução de Marco Giannotti) ocupa um lugar crucial. Pertencendo ao gênero peculiar da Naturphilosophie (que seria privilegiado pelo Romantismo Alemão), a Doutrina das Cores contrapõe-se a uma perspectiva estritamente físico-matemática, sugerindo que a óptica de Newton é cega para as cores. Goethe pretende fazer obra científica, mas sobretudo, redescobre a cor como fenômeno da experiência vivida – essa experiência cuja "verdade" só emerge de maneira pura com a pintura. Não se trata mais de uma física da luz e não se trata ainda de uma lógica das cores. Talvez pudéssemos dizer – com o risco de algum anacronismo – que, com este grande clássico da literatura e da filosofia, se esboça, pela primeira vez de forma sistemática, uma fenomenologia do visível.

The Metamorphosis of Plants, published in 1790, was Goethe's first major attempt to describe what he called in a letter to a friend “the truth about the how of the organism.” Inspired by the diversity of flora he found on a journey to Italy, Goethe sought a unity of form in diverse structures.
