Unerwartet begnet Kajetan Lorent – der Held von Sonnleitners Koja-Reihe – im Laboratorium des Apothekers Weißwasser seinem alten Schulfreund Robin wieder, bekannt aus dem Band "Kojas Waldläuferzeit". Damals, in Melk, war Robin "wegen der dummen Seerosengeschichte" der Schule verwiesen worden. Trotzdem hat er eisern an seinem Traum festgehalten, Schiffsarzt und "polynesischer Inselkönig" zu werden, und steht in seinem Medizinstudium nun kurz vor dem Physikum. Noch am gleichen Tag kommt es im Laboratorium jedoch zu einem Unfall, der einen Finger Robins lähmt – Robin wird als zum Kriegsdienst Untauglicher eingestuft und kann seine Hoffnung, später als Arzt der Kriegsmarine zu dienen, begraben. Stattdessen möchte er sich für die Menschheit nützlich machen und zieht, endlich Arzt geworden, durch das Vorbild Albert Schweitzers inspiriert, in ferne Länder, um den Armen dort medizinische Versorgung zukommen zu lassen. Die Schilderungen seiner Abenteuer auf See und in verschiedenen Ländern der Welt nehmen den Hauptteil des Romans ein. Auf der kleinen Liparischen Insel Filicudi wird er schließlich als Opfer einer Intrige allein ausgesetzt und muss nun ein entbehrungsreiches Leben als "Robin-Sohn" beginnen ...
