Los más imaginativos o más crédulos o más supersticiosos hablan de que, quizás, alguna vez los vampiros existieron y su horrible recuerdo perduró en el mito. Otros, en la misma corriente pero más mesurados, se inclinan por aventurar que en aquellos remotos tiempos hubo un grupo humano que, acuciado por las hambrunas –muy frecuentes entonces– incluía sangre humana en su forzada dieta, hasta que ese hábito se hizo parte indisoluble de su vida... Las otras comunidades humanas que entraron en contacto con él, finalmente terminaron por aniquilar a todos sus miembros, pero el horror ante esas prácticas quedó presente en las leyendas. Respaldan su argumentación los que suponen esto en un hecho comprobado: el hombre de Cromagnon –del que descendemos todos nosotros– daba activa caza a otra especie humana, el hombre de Neanderthal, con fines específicamente alimentarios. Nuestros antepasados eran caníbales, mal que nos pese, y allí están los cráneos de los pobres Neanderthal, en el Museo de Berlín, con prolijos agujeritos hechos en el hueso temporal para sorberles el cerebro como si fuera un huevo poché, por las avanzadas herramientas de nuestros ancestros... Lo cierto es que los vampiros siguen ejerciendo una enorme fascinación en la actualidad, gracias a que la literatura y el cine no se cansan de encumbrarlos como nuevos “héroes” de innumerables historias.Estimamos que esta selección recorre pero no agota, ciertamente, todo lo mucho y bueno que se ha escrito contando con los bebedores nocturnos de sangre como protagonistas principales, y esperamos que el lector disfrute tanto como nosotros este recorrido por las distintas formas de encarar este macabro y fascinante tema literario.
