Psychoanalytic work with socially traumatised patients is an increasingly popular vocation, but remains extremely demanding and little covered in the literature. In Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony, a range of contributors draw upon their own clinical work, and on research findings from work with seriously disturbed Holocaust survivors, to illuminate how best to conduct clinical work with such patients in order to maximise the chances of a positive outcome, and to reflect transferred trauma for the clinician. Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony closely examines the phenomenology of destruction inherent in the discourse of extreme traumatization, focusing on a particular case study: the recording of video testimonies from a group of extremely traumatized, chronically hospitalized Holocaust survivors in psychiatric institutions in Israel. This case study demonstrates how society reacts to unwanted memories, in media, history, and psychoanalysis – but it also shows how psychotherapists and researchers try to approach the buried memories of the survivors, through being receptive to shattered life narratives. Questions of bearing witness, testimony, the role of denial, and the impact of traumatic narrative on society and subsequent generations are explored. A central thread of this book is the unconscious countertransference resistance to the trauma discourse, which manifests itself in arenas that are widely apart, such as genocide denial, the "disappearance" of the hospitalized Holocaust survivors and of their life stories, mishearing their testimonies and ultimately refusing them the diagnosis of "traumatic psychosis". Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony provides an essential, multidisciplinary guide to working psychoanalytically with severely traumatised patients. It will appeal to psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trauma studies therapists.

This book brings together cutting-edge expertise from psychoanalysis, psychiatry, neuroscience and social science to shed light on the dark side of chronic depression. Considering different forms of depression on a continuum, the book develops new diagnostical considerations on depression. It includes detailed case studies from clinical psychoanalytical practice, conceptual considerations and historical analyses to current empirical and neurobiological studies on depression. The book is unique in bridging a gap between Anglo-Saxon/German psychoanalysis and French traditions in relation to clinical treatment techniques and conceptualizations of depression and trauma. Chapters present new research on the social, biographical, genetic and neurobiological determinants of severe depressive disorder and explore how these can be differentiated and expanded in the face of new cultural realities as well of new findings particularly in modern neurosciences. The book explores new understanding and discussion of treatment options for depression and will be essential reading for researchers and students in the field of depression and mental health research. It will also enrich the conceptual and clinical knowledge of psychoanalysts and psychotherapy researchers and students.

Etiopathogenic Theories And Models In Depression written by Juan Pablo Jiménez and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-03 with Psychology categories.

This book reviews the different theories and models that seek to explain the causes of depression from different perspectives, from the molecular to the socio-cultural level. Depression is a complex psychopathological construct of high phenotypic heterogeneity, which must be understood as a phenomenon in which different explanatory levels interact with each other. However, very little is known about this interaction. The aim of this book is to provide clinical psychologists and psychiatrists a better knowledge of the interaction of different etiopathogenic levels, in order to help these professionals make better therapeutic decisions when treating depressed patients. Chapters in this volume review etiopathogenic theories and models of depression developed by different disciplines and fields of research, such as clinical psychology, psychiatry, genetics, neurobiology, psychophisiology, psychoneuroendocrinology and psychosocial studies, and examine certain conditions where the integrated consideration of different explanatory levels illuminates how depression originates and is maintained. In each chapter, authors critically review the state of the art in their field of expertise and explain the weak points of their own theories and their possible openness or connection to alternative theories or models. Etiopathogenic Theories and Models in Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals working with depressed patients, as well as to researchers investigating how depression originates and is maintained, presenting an integrated perspective of high translational value for clinical practice.

The Unconscious written by Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-04 with Psychology categories.

The Unconscious explores the critical interdisciplinary dialogue between psychoanalysis and contemporary cognitive neuroscience. Characterised by Freud as ‘the science of the unconscious mind’, psychoanalysis has traditionally been viewed as a solely psychological discipline. However recent developments in neuroscience, such as the use of neuroimaging techniques to investigate the working brain, have stimulated and intensified the dialogue between psychoanalysis and these related mental sciences. This book explores the relevance of these discussions for our understanding of unconscious mental processes. Chapters present clinical case studies of unconscious dynamics, alongside theoretical and scientific papers in key areas of current debate and development. These include discussions of the differences between conceptualisations of ‘the unconscious’ in psychoanalysis and cognitive science, whether the core concepts of psychoanalysis are still plausible in light of recent findings, and how such understandings of the unconscious are still relevant to treating patients in psychotherapy today. These questions are explored by leading interdisciplinary researchers as well as practising psychoanalysts and psychotherapists. This book aims to bridge the gap between psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience, to enable a better understanding of researchers’ and clinicians’ engagements with the key topic of the unconscious. It will be of key interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of psychoanalysis, cognitive science, neuroscience and traumatology. It will also appeal to practising psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and clinicians.

A hard-hitting, and emotional story set in South Africa, following Themba and his dreams of becoming a famous footballer. Themba grows up dreaming of becoming a football star. One day he leaves the village and travels with his sister to the city in search of their mother. Life is a struggle and Themba has to grow up fast. A lucky break gives him the chance to train as a footballer and play professionally – but Themba has a secret – should he tell the truth about his HIV and risk everything he’s ever dreamed of? ~ Themba won an IBBY award - Best Book for Young People. Karin Chubb was Shortlisted for the Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in Translation for Themba, a unique award celebrating the high quality and diversity of translated fiction for young readers. The book was also made into an award-winning film. “Beautifully translated from the original ... it is a book full of hope and the more young people who read books like this and who come to understand how other young children live, the more this hope will spread.” Books, Teens and Magazines “Themba reminds me of my own childhood and youth in a township close to a small village in the Transvaal in South Africa: Like him I wanted to escape poverty, like him I had the hope that our world will be a just world one day – and like him I loved my mother who was working at the time as a maid for a white family. To be very honest: in soccer Themba seems to be simply better than I was.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu “READ OF THE MONTH” Pride magazine “...an inspirational coming of age drama about a young South African boy’s escape from poverty and the pusuit of a dream.” Spling onliner “It’s a rags to riches story – a story of hope, of dreaming your dreams and achieving them, and it’s also a story of friendship...” The Sunday Independent “It’s a really engaging book, and because Aids is a serious issue, it made us want to carry on reading more about it.” Durning Library teenage reading group “Beautifully translated from the original and it is an easy and straightforward read. However, the storyline is tough – poverty, AIDS and death haunt the pages of the book. The reader learns about the hardship of life for many ordinary South Africans (even after Mandela came to power) and the struggle for those families who have a family member suffering from AIDS. The problems they face do not lie solely in a lack of medication and good nutrition; it also lies in the ignorance of their neighbours and friends and a refusal of many to acknowledge the illness and help the ill. However this is not a depressing book – it is a book full of hope and the more young people who read books like this and who come to understand how other young children live, the more this hope will spread.” Books, Teens and Magazines
