This study uncovers the plethora of new, innovative drawing strategies that shaped French visual arts at the height of France’s imperial power. Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, Eugene Guillaume, and Félix Ravaisson, among others, designed new drawing procedures that responded to leading concerns of modern art and the exigencies of modern life: landscape painting and picturesque tourism, industrial design, and the use of drawing as vehicles of knowledge production and in social control. From graphic regimes that were “purement mathématique” and demanded the practice of orthographic projection, to those that privileged the articulation of proportions and the cultivation of an internal measuring system, fin de siècle educators in the fine and applied arts radically transformed drawing strategies and its history. The shifting parameters of drawing pedagogy and practice unfold onto a wider set of theoretical concerns central to humanistic inquiry and art-making today: the philosophy and cultural history of habit-based learning, the relation between industrialization and drawing, and the relation between art and mathematics. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, French studies, history of art education, history of philosophy, and history of science.

French philosophy is an internationally celebrated national philosophical tradition, and this Oxford Handbook offers a comprehensive approach to its history since 1800. The Handbook features essays written by renowned international specialists, illuminating key movements and positions, themes and thinkers in nineteenth-, twentieth- and even twenty-first-century French philosophy. The volume takes into account developments in recent historical scholarship by broadening the notion of Modern French Philosophy in two ways. Whereas recent approaches in the field have often ignored early nineteenth-century developments, this volume offers comprehensive treatment of French thought of this period in order to grasp better later developments. This study provides new interpretations of the little-known but fascinating Palazzo Trinci frescoes, relating them for the first time both to their physical context and to their social, political, and cultural environment. Chapters show how a humanist agenda subverted the historical and mythical associations more frequently used to promote powerful families, to point the Trinci family in new directions. It also shows how the artists involved adapted established civic, religious, and chivalric imagery in support of these ideas. The book argues that the resulting decorations are highly unusual for the period, in their serious political and social purpose. Positioning the Trinci as bringers of peace, not war, the family is now associated with culture and education and presented as willing to encourage debate about the character of the virtuous ruler and the nature of good government. "This dissertation examines nineteenth-century French drawing pedagogy’s relationship to concepts of habit and habit formation (also known as procedural and muscular memory). In the nineteenth century, habit was understood as any set of behaviors acquired through repetition and performed unconsciously. Habit was the acquisition of reflexes and thought patterns; it was the incorporation into one’s own mind and body certain modes of comportment and movement that became automatic and “second nature” over time. Within historical philosophical, scientific, and artistic discourses, habit often was interpreted negatively and perceived as a threat to autonomy and as anathema to creativity. As a result, many art historical studies have argued that nineteenth-century artists, particularly those linked to the avant-garde, eluded artistic training to undermine the well-worn habits or routines advocated by the Academy. Contrary to this consensus, my doctoral thesis shows how fundamental habit was to the philosophical tensions at play in drawing education itself and how its impact was much greater than previously thought. I argue that the opposition to habit is a retrospective art historical conceit that has prevented many scholars from understanding its importance to nineteenth-century art pedagogy. Through archivally-rooted chapters focused on four influential pedagogues—the philosopher Félix Ravaisson, the academician Eugène Guillaume, the instructor Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, and the draftsman Félix Régamey—this thesis analyzes “habitual” drawing practices to shed new light on the education of expert eyes, the material practices of schematization, and the global impact of French artistic training"--
