Have you ever wondered if you might be living a dream? How do you know what is real and what is illusion? The popular movie "The Matrix" explored this theme a few years ago with great effect. Yet this is a serious question requiring serious thought. The book "Dreams of Reality", written from a scientifi c perspective, takes the reader on an intellectual journey through the various aspects and dimensions of reality, from our current state of understanding to the so-called metaphysical. You may find a number of surprising and thought-provoking vistas along this yellow-brick road. Consider them with an open mind and then let your intuition tell you where the dream ends and reality begins.

An exploration of radical megaprojects in the Ecuadorian Amazon, considering the fate of utopian fantasies under conditions of global capitalism From 2007 to 2017, the “Citizens’ Revolution” launched an ambitious series of post-neoliberal megaprojects in the remote Amazonian region of Ecuador, including an interoceanic transport corridor, a world-leading biotechnology university, and a planned network of two hundred “Millennium Cities.” The aim was to liberate the nation from its ecologically catastrophic dependence on Amazonian oil reserves, while transforming its jungle region from a wild neoliberal frontier into a brave new world of “twenty-first-century socialism.” This book documents the heroic scale of this endeavor, the surreal extent of its failure, and the paradoxical process through which it ended up reinforcing the economic model that it had been designed to overcome. It explores the phantasmatic and absurd dimensions of the transformation of social reality under conditions of global capitalism, deconstructing the utopian fantasies of the state, and drawing attention to the eruption of insurgent utopias staged by those with nothing left to lose.

Dreams and Visions have constituted an important topic and point of departure in the past; but also continue to play a present role in literature, political thought, economic theory, and in the arts. An essential historical topos, Dreams and Visions--the second in a series that projects past issues into the present--brings significant contributions from an interdisciplinary spectrum of standpoints in order to discover fresh insights. Perhaps this is the essence, in any case, of "Vision"--to discover new, fresh ways of conceptualizing a problem, topic, or historical enquiry, which is the goal of this volume. Contributors are Tamara Albertini, David Bevington, Eolene M. Boyd-MacMillan, John N. Crossley, J. Harold Ellens, Wendy Furman-Adams, Robert W. Hanning, Virginia K. This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of dreams as understood from a range of diverse perspectives, and their relevance for pastoral care. Its approach is both systematic and practical, enabling ministers, spiritual directors and counsellors to understand the nature of dreams and the role they play in the lives of those in their pastoral care. Dreams are a universal phenomenon and have a long established role in religious faith and practice. Yet many pastors feel ill-equipped to deal with this area of human consciousness. In this guide, twenty-two contributors from a wide variety of disciplines explore the potential of dreams to bring about renewal, healing, reconciliation and encounter with the transcendent. • Part 1 examines dreams from theological, psychological and cultural anthropological perspectives. • Part 2 explores the theme of dreams and religion through empirical data, theory and reflections. • Part 3 considers dreams and the practice of pastoral care for a variety of settings and groups.

Reveals the historical impact of dream rhetoric on Chinese modernity and nation-building Realism and the rhetoric of dreams intersected in modern Chinese literature from the May Fourth Era in the early twentieth century through the period just following the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976. The Edge of Knowing investigates this relationship, showing how writers’ attention to dreams demonstrates the multiple influences of Western psychology, utopian desire for revolutionary change, and the enduring legacy of traditional Chinese philosophy. At the same time, modern Chinese writers used their work to represent social reality for the purpose of nation building. Recent political usage of dream rhetoric in the People’s Republic of China attests to the continuing influence of dreams on the imagination of Chinese modernity. By employing a number of critical perspectives, The Edge of Knowing will appeal to readers seeking to understand the complicated relationship between literary form and Chinese history and politics.

Films and Dreams considers the essential link between films and the world of dreams. To discuss dream theory in the context of film studies means moving from the original, clinical context within which dream theory was originally developed to an environment established by primarily aesthetic concerns. Botz-Bornstein deals with dreams as "self-sufficient" phenomena that are interesting not because of their contents but because of the "dreamtense" through which they deploy their being. A diverse selection of films are examined in this light: Tarkovsky's anti-realism exploring the domain of the improbable between symbolization, representation and alienation; Sokurov's subversive attacks on the modern image ideology; Arthur Schnitzler's shifting of the familiar to the uncanny and Kubrick's avoidance of this structural model in Eyes Wide Shut; and Wong Kar-Wai's dreamlike panorama of parodied capitalism.
