Am Ortsrand gab es Pferche mit Schafen, Ziegen und Kühen. Uringeruch hing in der heißen Luft. Vor dem Saloon standen vier Pferde am Holm. Zwischen den Häusern der Stadt lastete die Hitze. Die Luft schien zu kochen. Niemand ahnte, dass sich in dieser Stunde eine Hölle für Ned Colton anbahnte ... Ned Colton sprang vom Wagenbock und ging in den Store. Die Ladenglocke bimmelte. Hinter dem Verkaufstresen stand Liam Sanders und bediente eine Kundin. In dem Raum war es düster. Es roch nach Gewürzen. Der Farmer grüßte und Liam Sanders erwiderte seinen Gruß. Dann sagte Colton: »Ich habe alles aufgeschrieben, was ich brauche. Stelle es mir zusammen, Liam. Ich gehe auf ein Bier in den Saloon.« »Geh nur zu. Und lass dir Zeit.«
