Ruim tien jaar geleden maakte Bernlef, dank zij de schilder Siet Zuyderland, kennis met een legendarische plek uit de Amerikaanse geschiedenis: Coney Island. Het voormalige centrum voor grootscheeps vermaak was echter toen al gereduceerd tot wat armzalige restanten. Wat zowel Zuyderland als Bernlef aantrok was een historisch complex dat op het punt stond te verdwijnen. Juist daarom begon Bernlef zich te verdiepen in de geschiedenis van deze zuidelijkste punt van Brooklyn, waar in het begin van deze eeuw lunaparken verrezen die de eerste massadromen produceerden: een Egyptische straat vol kamelen en gesluierde vrouwen, een spoorweg door de Zwitserse Alpen, een stad vol dwergen en de Ondergang van Pompeï. In de bordkartonnen decors werden massaspelen opgevoerd en werd het heimwee van de emigranten naar de oude wereld kundig bespeeld. Bernlefs roman De witte stad is gebaseerd op de geschiedenis van het lunapark Dreamland, schepping van William H. Reynolds, en het uitvloeisel van een hoofse liefde, ooit door Reynolds in die andere, half gedroomde stad, Venetië, beleefd. Van 1904 tot 1911 hield Reynolds' droom aan de Atlantische Oceaan stand. Bernlefs boek speelt zich in het laatste jaar van het bestaan van Dreamland af. Het is een bijna filmische evocatie van de bonte stoet variété-artiesten, dwergen, waarzegsters, ragtime-pianisten en hoeren die Coney Island in die tijd bevolkten. Maar de eerste tekenen van het verval zijn al zichtbaar. Zonder dat de producenten van deze eerste Amerikaanse droom het beseffen doet de film - voorlopig nog als kermisattractie - zijn intrede. Die zal het einde betekenen van een korte maar schilderachtige periode. J. Bernlef (1937) schreef een groot aantal dicht-, verhalen- en essaybundels. Van zijn romans zijn de laatste twee, Hersenschimmen en Publiek geheim, de bekendste geworden. Hij ontving vele prijzen, waaronder de Constantijn Huygens- en de AKO Literatuur Prijs. Zijn novelle Vallende ster werd voor laatstgenoemde prijs genomineerd.
