The Small Gas Turbine aircraft engine emerged in the 1940s as a distinct class of turbine engines. Following the late 1940s, the powerful, lightweight and reliable small gas turbine engine evolved as a major technology development leading to a new generation of aircraft, rotor craft and missiles. The compact size of the small gas turbine engine inhibits the use of the fuel injection systems used in conventional gas turbine engines. Hence an effective and efficient fuel injection system which is also simple in design was required to produce high-quality atomization of fuel in the small gas turbine engine. A centrifugal atomizer or rotary fuel slinger is designed to work on simple principles of engineering mechanics, while providing fine atomization of liquid. This research is an attempt to provide insight into the mechanism of atomization produced by fuel slingers and develop a mathematical model to predict the droplet trajectories, based on the elements of droplet breakup dynamics. The results of the model were further evaluated to test for compatibility with existing theories of atomization and thereby assess the applicability of the model to explain the complex mechanisms of liquid breakup from these atomizers. Mathematical expressions to predict the spatial and temporal positions of droplets were developed using appropriate relations for the coefficient of drag which accounted for the deformation of the droplets and reasonably accurate correspondence with experimentally visualized droplet trajectories has been observed. An analysis of the influence of hydrogen bonding in water, on the droplet breakup mechanism has also been made to account for the surface tension forces involved in atomization.

The Droplet Deformation and Breakup Model was used to predict deformation of droplets approaching the leading edge stagnation line of an airfoil. The quasi-steady model was solved for each position along the droplet path. A program was developed to solve the non-linear, second order, ordinary differential equation that governs the model. A fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the equation. Experimental slip velocities from droplet breakup studies were used as input to the model which required slip velocity along the particle path. The center of mass displacement predictions were compared to the experimental measurements from the droplet breakup studies for droplets with radii in the range of 200 to 700 mm approaching the airfoil at 50 and 90 m/sec. The model predictions were good for the displacement of the center of mass for small and medium sized droplets. For larger droplets the model predictions did not agree with the experimental results.

Diseases of the Sinuses: A Comprehensive Textbook of Diagnosis and Treatment, 2nd Edition, offers the definitive source of information about the basic science of the sinuses and the clinical approach to sinusitis. Since the widely praised publication of the first edition, understanding of sinus disease has changed dramatically, mainly as a result of recent developments and new discoveries in the field of immunology. This updated and expanded edition is divided into sections addressing, separately, the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, medical and surgical management of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis. Special entities such as autoimmune-related sinusitis, allergy and sinusitis, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease are discussed in separate chapters. The role of immunodeficiency is also addressed. The management section has been fully updated to incorporate new medical modalities and surgical procedures. Developed by a distinguished group of international experts who share their expertise and insights from years of collective experience in treating sinus diseases, the book will appeal to anyone who has an interest in sinus disease, including both physicians and allied health professionals. Internists, pediatricians, allergists, otolaryngologists and infectious disease specialists will find the book to be an invaluable, comprehensive reference. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners who work with specialists who treat sinus disease will also benefit from the book.

Presents Drying Breakthroughs for an Array of Materials Despite being one of the oldest, most energy-intensive unit operations, industrial drying is perhaps the least scrutinized technique at the microscopic level. Yet in the wake of today’s global energy crisis, drying research and development is on the rise. Following in the footsteps of the widely read first edition, Advanced Drying Technologies, Second Edition is the direct outcome of the recent phenomenal growth in drying literature and new drying hardware. This edition provides an evaluative overview of new and emerging drying technologies, while placing greater emphasis on making the drying process more energy efficient in the green age. Draws on the Authors’ 60+ Years of Combined Experience Fueled by the current energy crisis and growing consumer demand for improved quality products, this thoroughly updated resource addresses cutting-edge drying technologies for numerous materials such as high-valued, heat-sensitive pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and some foods. It also introduces innovative techniques, such as heat-pump drying of foods, which allow both industrial practice and research and development projects to save energy, reduce carbon footprints, and thus improve the bottom line. Four New Chapters: Spray-Freeze-Drying Fry Drying Refractance Window Drying Mechanical Thermal Expression Requiring no prior knowledge of chemical engineering, this single-source reference should assist researchers in turning the laboratory curiosities of today into the revolutionary novel drying technologies of tomorrow.

Readers with an engineering degree will be reminded of the psychrometric processes associated with heating and air conditioning as they learn of the various controls schemes used in the variety of heating and air conditioning system types they will encountered in the field. Maintenance technicians will also find the book useful because it describes various control hardware and control strategies that were used in the past and are prevalent in most existing heating and air conditioning systems. Designers of new systems will find the fundamentals described in this book to be a useful starting point, and they will also benefit from descriptions of new digital technologies and energy management systems. This technology is found in modern building HVAC system designs.
