You're about to enter a completely different kind of drugstore. One where herbal medicines are offered right alongside conventional pharmaceuticals. Where bottles of feverfew stand next to bottles of aspirin, and echinacea has its place among other cold and flu remedies. The Herbal Drugstore is the only place where you can compare mainstream drug treatments and their herbal alternatives for close to 100 common health problems. You'll find herbs that have the same healing powers as many prescription and over-the-counter medications—only they're cheaper and gentler, with few or no side effects. Whether you need fast first-aid or long-term relief, The Herbal Drugstore has a remedy for you. Here's just a sampling: Immobilized by arthritis? Rub on capsaicin cream, a natural pain reliever made from hot peppers Can't sleep? Start snoozing with valerian—it's as effective as Valium, but it isn't addictive Want to lose a few pounds? Get a helping hand from psyllium, an herbal alternative to appetite suppressants Feeling stressed? Calm jangled nerves with ginseng—it won't undermine alertness Battling bronchitis? Clear up that cough with licorice, a natural expectorant Need help with high blood pressure? Turn to hawthorn—it has much in common with beta blockers, except for the side effects The Herbal Drugstore features these and many more herbal remedies—712 in all! They're profiled right next to their pharmaceutical counterparts, so you can make your own comparisons and decide which treatments are best for you.

Despite all, with a profound philosophical optimism that better days were coming." From a black perspective, Jackson's work forms a particular and important testimony, both positive and negative, about life in the United States from the 1930s through the 1970s, and about life in the Army during the 1950s. The Dream Drugstore written by J. Allan Hobson and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-08-23 with Medical categories.

An investigation into the brain's chemistry and the mechanisms of chemically altered states of consciousness. In this book, J. Allan Hobson offers a new understanding of altered states of consciousness based on knowledge of how our brain chemistry is balanced when we are awake and how that balance shifts when we fall asleep and dream. He draws on recent research that enables us to explain how psychedelic drugs work to disturb that balance and how similar imbalances may cause depression and schizophrenia. He also draws on work that expands our understanding of how certain drugs can correct imbalances and restore the brain's natural equilibrium. Hobson explains the chemical balance concept in terms of what we know about the regulation of normal states of consciousness over the course of the day by brain chemicals called neuromodulators. He presents striking confirmation of the principle that every drug that has transformative effects on consciousness interacts with the brain's own consciousness-altering chemicals. In the section called "The Medical Drugstore," Hobson describes drugs used to counteract anxiety and insomnia, to raise and lower mood, and to eliminate or diminish the hallucinations and delusions of schizophrenia. He discusses the risks involved in their administration, including the possibility of new disorders caused by indiscriminate long-term use. In "The Recreational Drugstore," Hobson discusses psychedelic drugs, narcotic analgesia, and natural drugs. He also considers the distinctions between legitimate and illegitimate drug use. In the concluding "Psychological Drugstore," he discusses the mind as an agent, not just the mediator, of change, and corrects many erroneous assumptions and practices that hinder the progress of psychoanalysis.

Drugstore Cowboy written by James Fogle and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-10-01 with Fiction categories.

The novel that inspired the major motion picture directed by Gus Van Sant Bob Hughes, the offbeat, edgy, and slightly skewed leader of a crew of traveling junkies, describes himself as “one of the cleverest and ringiest and most notorious dope fiend drugstore cowboys on the entire West Coast, including Alaska.” Bob, his wife, Diane, Rick, and Nadine have a penchant for robbing drugstores and grabbing pills and capsules to support their habit and relieve their boredom. It’s an all-too-real examination of the addict’s domain: the euphoria, the paranoia, the busts, the overdoses, the haunting reality of trying to survive your own world. But James Fogle—who based this extraordinary novel on his own experiences, and who spent thirty-five years of his life in prison—has turned their lives into something darkly comic. Set in Portland, Oregon, in the early 1970s, Drugstore Cowboy is a resonating evocation of life at the bottom, and yet, by portraying his characters without judgment or glamor, Fogle has illuminated them. His debut novel is a singular work of contemporary fiction.

The Drugstore Cowboy written by Cornell Woolrich and has been published by Wildside Press LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-27 with Fiction categories.

Although “The Drugstore Cowboy” (published in 1927 and unrelateld to the movie of the same name) has some crime elements, including a stolen car and a high-speed police chase, it is primarily a Jazz Age tale. Filmed, it would have made a terrific screwball comedy in the right director’s hands—imagine young actors Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in the starring roles as you read. If you are a fan of Woolrich's mysteries, this is a worthy addition to his oeuvre, showcases elements he would later bring to the fore as a mystery writer.
