Le suicide des adolescents et des jeunes adultes est l’acte contre nature d’une jeunesse porteuse de vie et d’avenir. On élude vite celui de marginaux comme les prisonniers, les homosexuels ou les psychotiques. On fait la une, par contre, des rares suicides au travail. Un non-dit règne sur le suicide des vieillards, largement sous-estimé ou accepté comme libérateur, quand il ne serait pas légitime ! Notre société a un rapport malsain, irrationnel et immature avec la mort et avec le suicide. Comme avec la vie. Un rapport perverti par certaines croyances religieuses, par l’indigence de l’enseignement philosophique à l’école et par une vie sociale très rude, déstructurée, trop matérialiste où la perte d’un idéal individuel et collectif se généralise. Il existe une véritable fascination pour le suicide. Il se pose alors la question de son acceptabilité par la société et surtout par les pouvoirs politiques, judiciaires et religieux puis par le pouvoir médical. A l’évidence, tous ces pouvoirs privent l’individu de cette liberté de choisir le lieu, le moment et les moyens de son départ. Mais peu accordent les moyens de se sauver à celui qui serait tenté de se donner la mort. Une prévention du suicide est cependant possible et elle est nécessaire, mais ne prend-t-on pas actuellement le problème à l’envers ? Cet ouvrage analyse ce phénomène et s’adresse à ceux qui restent. Il aborde les questions que le suicide pose et les réponses qui y ont été apportées. Afin de tenter d’en tirer des enseignements pour l’avenir. Freud classait de nombreux suicides parmi les « actes manqués ». Le suicidant est souvent dans l’ambivalence, fréquemment habité par le désir d’un brutal et profond endormissement pour renaître. Qu’il soit ou non mû par l’intention inconsciente de survivre, ne faut-il pas l’y aider ?

In this major new study Christian Baudelot and Roger Establet provide a timely and wide-ranging account of the changing nature of suicide in the world today. The suicide rate is soaring in the former Communist bloc, in India and in China, which now has the highest female suicide rate in the world. This rise coincides with those countries accelerated entry into a period of brutal modernization. In the developed countries of the West, suicide rates are rising fastest amongst young men and those social groups that are furthest down the social scale. How can we explain these trends and what do they tell us about modern societies? The social impact of suicide has preoccupied sociologists from Emile Durkheim onwards. For Durkheim, the rising suicide rate was an effect of the rise of modernity and the individualism, growing affluence and increased anomie that accompanied it. Baudelot and Establet draw upon Durkheim and his successor Maurice Halbwachs to argue that classic sociological theories of suicide require some modification. The link between suicide, affluence and individualism is more complex: suicide rates do reflect broad social trends but they are also influenced by the structural position and lived experience of small social groups. The notion of social well-being is demonstrated to be a key factor in changes in suicide rates. Whilst it is well-known that sociology cannot explain why individuals commit suicide, the suicide of individuals and the micro-groups to which they belong can tell us a lot about the societies in which they live.
