Excerpt: The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking was one of the elite Panzer divisions of the thirty eight Waffen SS divisions. It was recruited from foreign volunteers, from Scandinavia, Finland, Estonia, The Netherlands, and Belgium under the command of German officers. During the course of World War II, the division progressed from a motorised infantry division to a Panzer division and served on the Eastern Front during World War II. It surrendered in May 1945 to the advancing American forces in Austria. After the success of the Infanterie-Regiment (mot.) Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, SS-Verfugungstruppen-Division and the SS-Division Totenkopf during the early war campaigns in Poland and the West, it was decided to expand the number of Waffen SS divisions. Due to the influx of foreign volunteers, particularly from Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway, a decision was made to form a volunteer division of the Waffen SS under the command of German officers. This unit, originally organized as the Nordische Division (Nr.5), was to be made up of Nordic volunteers mixed with ethnic German Waffen SS veterans. Describes and illustrates the full range of Dutch resistance groups and German and collaborationist counter-resistance groups during the Nazi occupation in 1940-45. The Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in World War II followed a complex course, whose scope is not widely understood. It was a great deal broader and more varied than the much-reported German counter-espionage success against Dutch agents parachuted in by the Special Operations Executive. From spring 1943 onwards, three Dutch Resistance organizations gained momentum: the Order Service (OD), the Resistance Council (RVV), and the National Assault Teams (LKP). In response, the Germans raised collaborationist forces to counter the Resistance, including the much-feared Landwacht. In September 1944 the OD, RVV and LKP amalgamated into the Netherlands Interior Forces (NBS), while Allied troops began to liberate the southern provinces. This allowed NBS forces in the south to form Stoottroepen, uniformed and armed by both the British and US armies. These assisted the Allied advance, while a bloody underground struggle continued in the occupied north until final liberation in April–May 1945. Illustrated with rare photos and new colour plates, this book gives a comprehensive account of one of the lesser-known struggles of World War II.

During the Second World War, approximately 25,000 Dutchmen served within the ranks of the military branch of the German SS: the Waffen-SS. They volunteered to fight to secure the victory of Nazi Germany. These Dutch volunteers fought mainly on the Eastern Front, and to a lesser extent, within their own national borders. After the war, the Allied victors regarded them as part of a criminal organization and jointly responsible for the atrocious transgressions of the Nazi regime. In the Netherlands, these men were reviled, branded as traitors and became pariahs in their own country. Those who had devoted themselves to the Nazi regime caused so much grief to the Netherlands that they had to be held accountable. Despite their military achievements, their reputation was damaged forever. The Netherlands supplied the largest contingent of SS soldiers from the occupied North-western European territories. Who were these people? What led them to enlist, and what were the consequences of their choice? An important part of this study involves the autobiographical texts of nineteen Dutch volunteers in the Waffen-SS. These ego-documents recount their own immediate experiences and are mainly fragments from diaries, but there are also letters, individual notes, and memoirs. The ego-documents are placed within the larger historical context to provide an answer to the question of whether these men were only ideologically motivated and unconditional Nazi sympathizers, and for this, their criminal records are also researched. Among other topics, the book discusses their choice to enlist, their experiences at the front, and their involvement in genocide, providing a new perspective on the Eastern Front.

This study is based on research which I conducted in the Netherlands in 1948 and 1949. In addition, I was able to rely on experiences and impressions of the 1944-1946 period, when I was stationed in the Low Countries as a United States Army Military Intelligence Officer. In my description of Dutch purge measures I have attempte~ to be as unbiased a judge as possible; whenever I was unable to arrive at a definite conclusion I con tented myself with describing the opposing points of view. I am quite aware that this attitude of "neutrality" may be criticized, not only by many ex-Resistance men who have become dis gusted with the alleged softness of the purge, but also by many others who appear equally dismayed about its severity. For purposes of comparison, readers who are familiar with action against collaborators in other countries - such as France, Italy, or the Balkans - may note that the Dutch purge was not dominated by considerations of party politics. All Dutchme- employers and workers, Protestants and Catholics, Conservatives and Socialists - had been united in their resistance against the enemy. Consequently, disagreements about purge measures did not follow class, religious, or party lines. The few Dutch Commu nists had never been able to dominate the Resistance; neither were they able to exploit the purge for their purposes. Thus, in Holland problems of collaboration and purge could be studied in their purest form, without consideration of other factors.

Henry Schogt met his wife, Corrie, in 1954 in Amsterdam. Each knew the other had grown up in the Netherlands during World War II, but for years they barely spoke of their experiences. This was true for many people — the memories were just too painful. Years later, Henry and Corrie began to piece their memories together, to untangle reality from dreams. In May of 1940, Holland was invaded and occupied by the German army. Life was never easy during the Nazi regime. Travel was strictly controlled and a curfew was imposed on the towns. Arbitrary arrest was a constant threat for the people, as was forced labour. All attempts by the Nazis and their collaborators in the Dutch Nazi Party to 'pacify, ' or 'nazify', the people were failures, thanks largely to Dutch social cohesion, and an active underground press. The Mollens, a family of nine, lived in Arnhem, where the father owned a garage and was employed by the authorities to service their vehicles. The Mollens had to cooperate, perforce, but swore never to collaborate with the occupying forces. Survival hinged on a battle of wits with the Germans-and our family usually came out on top. Their most harrowing experience was witnessing the brutal arrest of their Jewish neighbours. All changed after the failure of the battle of Arnhem in September 1944. The entire civilian population of the city and surrounding towns were driven out of their homes at a few hours' notice, and left to find shelter on their own, taking only what they could carry. After three days of walking, the Mollen family found a farmer who allowed them to stay in his empty barn; this was their new 'home' for the last eight months of the war. The Barn narrates the ordeals of the Mollen family during the invasion and occupation of the Netherlands. Mere survival during this time became increasingly difficult, notably during the winter of 1944-1945, which became known as the "Hunger Winter." As food and fuel became more and more scarce, the Mollen family survived on turnips, beets and acorns. They had kept their secret radio, which was hooked up to a Gestapo power line. It afforded them vital information from the BBC about the military situation, which enabled them to taunt the Germans, albeit at risk to their lives. Living through this ordeal called for great ingenuity and humour. We follow the two youngest Mollens who carried out a daring plan to 'liberate' some of their country's stolen coal from a moving train at night; and how the youngest Mollen girl had to have an abscessed tooth extracted without freezing. Written from interviews with members of the Mollen family, the author brings both personal and historical events to the reader in part memoir and part narrative styles. The scenes of their liberation and of the post-liberation events are of an interest equal to their wartime survival, as is their eventual return home to an empty shell of a house.
