"[This report] gives the background on 509 people (an average of twenty-two per year) from BAME, refugee and migrant communities who have died between 1991-2014 in suspicious circumstances in which the police, prison authorities or immigration detention officers have been implicated. It concludes that a large proportion of these deaths have involved undue force and many more a culpable lack of care; despite critical narrative verdicts warning of dangerous procedures and the proliferation of guidelines, lessons are not being learnt--people die in similar ways year on year; although inquest juries have delivered verdicts of unlawful killing in at least twelve cases, no one has been convicted for their part in these deaths over the two and a half decades of the research; privatisation and sub-contracting of custodial, health and other services compounds concerns and makes it harder to call agencies to account; family and community campaigns have been crucial in bringing about any change in institutions and procedures"--Institute of Race Relations website, viewed November 23, 2021.

Life is characterised by movement, change and development, including transitions, losses and grief. People experiencing loss must learn to accommodate it and, sometimes, relearn new roles. Whether the offender is accommodating general loss (such as transition), the loss of others or facing their own impending death, the bereavement process can become a particularly complicated experience for those involved in the criminal justice system. Criminal offenders may be excluded from participating in grief rituals and may receive few explicit opportunities to talk about a loss they’ve experienced, sometimes resulting in disenfranchised grief. Informing thinking around assessment, care, and support procedures, this volume seeks to bring together a range of perspectives from different disciplines on crucial issues surrounding the impact of loss, death, dying and bereavement for criminal offenders. The book will explore inherent challenges and responses to the criminal justice system by considering to what extent offenders’ loss, death, dying and bereavement experiences have been - or should be - recognised in policy and practice. The first section considers theoretical approaches to loss; the next section translates these issues using professional perspectives to explore practical applications; and the final section introduces an offender perspective. Through identifying challenges and consolidating evidence, this multidisciplinary book will interest researchers interested in loss and bereavement in vulnerable communities, concepts of disenfranchised grief, end-of-life care and mental healthcare in the criminal justice system.

Dying For Justice is a novel -- an adventure story driven by a miscarriage of justice and one man's way of dealing with it. It turns out sometimes righting a wrong can be murder. The lead character, Ed Somersby, is just an ordinary young man. He has a responsible job, a mortgage and a live-together girlfriend. He's a nice guy and people naturally like him. The only thing that sets him harmlessly apart is that he's got long hair, a beard, and rides a motorcycle. All that changes when his girlfriend is killed in a road accident, and the driver who was responsible is let off by the courts. Angry and bitter, Somersby stalks the driver, unaware the driver's father is a wealthy London gangster. Father and son react aggressively to Somersby's activities, the situation rapidly escalates, and Somersby finds himself under sentence of death. As the conflict unfolds, Somersby is frequently guilt-ridden, sometimes depressed, sometimes elated, and occasionally terrified. He survives several attempts to kill him, more by luck than skill. But he also learns how to fight back, matching violence with violence. Supporting him, and eventually helping him to escape from his nightmare situation are two women: a kind, gentle, intelligent law student who falls in love with him, and a supermarket manageress whose no-nonsense mental toughness makes her a priceless ally. If you'd like to read a story about someone who isn't a supremely competent, conscience-free killing machine but is instead much closer to people you know, or the person you are, told (as if) by the character himself, and without the use of F-words, this book will provide a few hours of believable escapism.
