The towering sculptures of Dylan Lewis are becoming well-known landmarks in South Africa, where they grace botanical gardens, golf courses, grand hotel foyers and the halls of discerning collectors. Increasingly, they are being snapped up by galleries and institutions abroad. This publication builds on an earlier book, bringing the photographic record of Dylan Lewis’ work up to date. The brief introductory text reveals how the sculptor’s boyhood in a happily bohemian, nature-loving and creative family inspired him, and traces his artistic development from what have come to be known as ‘the cat years’ to his current, more esoteric and mythical approach. This classy and beautifully presented book showcases some of Lewis’ most ambitious and successful works in a series of dramatic photographs, and includes images of preliminary sketches and working methods.

The renowned South African photographer Daniel Naudé's moving studies of cattle in cultures where they are considered sacred offer unique insight into the lives of the people, the animals, and the spiritual practices that have remained unchanged for thousands of years. For the past two years Daniel Naudé has focused on photographing cattle in societies where these animals are venerated. This beautiful book presents images from parts of Uganda, Madagascar, and India where these animals represent a culture's most profound beliefs. Naudé photographs his subjects with the same respect any photographer would lend toward humans. Richly colored and exquisitely composed, these portraits capture the animals' presence and the landscapes they inhabit while also telling us much about cosmology, ancestor worship, culture, and the tradition of spiritual practices that have evolved over the ages. Like the best photographers, Naudé achieves this all within a single photographic frame.

If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Sounding The Cape written by Denis Martin and has been published by African Minds this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Music categories.

For several centuries Cape Town has accommodated a great variety of musical genres which have usually been associated with specific population groups living in and around the city. Musical styles and genres produced in Cape Town have therefore been assigned an "identity" which is first and foremost social. This volume tries to question the relationship established between musical styles and genres, and social - in this case pseudo-racial - identities. In Sounding the Cape, Denis-Constant Martin recomposes and examines through the theoretical prism of creolisation the history of music in Cape Town, deploying analytical tools borrowed from the most recent studies of identity configurations. He demonstrates that musical creation in the Mother City, and in South Africa, has always been nurtured by contacts, exchanges and innovations whatever the efforts made by racist powers to separate and divide people according to their origin. Musicians interviewed at the dawn of the 21st century confirm that mixture and blending characterise all Cape Town's musics. They also emphasise the importance of a rhythmic pattern particular to Cape Town, the ghoema beat, whose origins are obviously mixed. The study of music demonstrates that the history of Cape Town, and of South Africa as a whole, undeniably fostered creole societies. Yet, twenty years after the collapse of apartheid, these societies are still divided along lines that combine economic factors and "racial" categorisations. Martin concludes that, were music given a greater importance in educational and cultural policies, it could contribute to fighting these divisions and promote the notion of a nation that, in spite of the violence of racism and apartheid, has managed to invent a unique common culture.

Refiguring The Archive written by Carolyn Hamilton and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Social Science categories.

Refiguring the Archive at once expresses cutting-edge debates on `the archive' in South Africa and internationally, and pushes the boundaries of those debates. It brings together prominent thinkers from a range of disciplines, mainly South Africans but a number from other countries. Traditionally archives have been seen as preserving memory and as holding the past. The contributors to this book question this orthodoxy, unfolding the ways in which archives construct, sanctify, and bury pasts. In his contribution, Jacques Derrida (an instantly recognisable name in intellectual discourse worldwide) shows how remembering can never be separated from forgetting, and argues that the archive is about the future rather than the past. Collectively the contributors demonstrate the degree to which thinking about archives is embracing new realities and new possibilities. The book expresses a confidence in claiming for archival discourse previously unentered terrains. It serves as an early manual for a time that has already begun.

One of South Africa's best-known and well-loved gardeners shares the history and stories behind Old Nectar, the famous South African garden that has been visited and admired for decades. Detailing the garden's humble and inauspicious beginnings--including a neglected property that lacked modern conveniences such as electricity and indoor plumbing--this keepsake discusses how the garden gained worldwide acclaim for its variety and year-round splendor. This beautifully designed book, filled with some 200 exquisite photographs, shows off the several different gardens that make up Una van der Spuy's creation, and presents the range of flowers, plants, and trees through the various seasons of the year.
