In this report multi-level systems theory was applied to linear dynamic optimization problems. The two main reasons for using multi-level approach to optimization problems are: (a) this method eases the difficulty of computation of large scale optimization problems; (b) this method may make control systems insensitive to disturbances. In this report reason (a) above was considered in detail. The technique used is as follows. A large scale control system is divided into smaller subsystems by the 'decomposition technique' neglecting the interactions among the sybsystems. The 'higher level goalseeking units' compensate for the neglected interactions through successive approximation. The convergence condition of the successive approximation was treated. (Author).

Dynamic Optimization In Planning Under Process Model Uncertainty written by Tarun Bhatia and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Chemical processes categories.

Abstract: "Planning for multi-product batch plants involves decisions for facility design, product scheduling, inventory control etc. These are usually addressed for recipe based processes with fixed stage processing times. There is significant benefit in incorporating detailed dynamic process models while planning, and addressing the overall problem simultaneously (Bhatia and Biegler [1]). It thus becomes desirable to have sufficiently accurate process models, or develop methods that deal with process model uncertainty. This work addresses dynamic processing and planning decisions simultaneously for multi product batch plants, now with uncertainty in process parameters. Instances of uncertain parameters are used to construct planning scenarios that are addressed through a multiperiod planning formulation. Dynamic processing under uncertainty is addressed via a closed loop state feedback based correction strategy. Control parameters in the closed loop implementation of processing decisions are then determined in an open loop manner, and treated as invariant design variables in the multiperiod problem formulation."

New Dynamic Optimization Models For Tax Loss Valuation And Sourcing Problems written by Nilofar Varzgani and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Mathematical optimization categories.

The dissertation comprises of three essays on multi-period dynamic optimization models. The first and second essays address the problem of valuing tax loss-carryforward(s) (TCLFs) and Carryback(s) (TLCBs) that arise frequently in theory and practice. While there have been a number of empirical papers that have shown TLCFs (TLCBs) are value relevant, there is little guidance on how to actually value these. The first essay introduces the valuation problem and provides a survey of literature in the area. The few analytical papers that have attempted to provide valuation formulas are highly stylized, do not capture the institutional complexity of the tax code, and are generally inadequate. In the second essay we develop a finite horizon discrete time stochastic dynamic programming framework for valuing TLCFs (TLCBs) that allows for piece-wise linear progressive taxation, and also incorporates many of the institutional features of the tax code. In the third essay we investigate a multi-product, multi-echelon contract manufacturer based business model. The decision problem faced by the manufacturing company is twofold: (a) how many contract manufacturers to get involved in business with (one supplier model vs a multi-supplier model, (b) how much volume should be allocated to each contract manufacturer, if the multiple supplier model is chosen. The objective is to maximize savings from the volume allocation process. Such problems arise often in many manufacturing industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, energy etc., for Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) firms. We provide a discrete time stochastic dynamic programming framework, and use numerical methods to study different volume allocation scenarios first in a one period setting, later extending the analysis to a multi-period model.

In this book a rigorous, systematic, mathematical analysis is presented for oligopoly with multi-product firms in static as well as dynamic frameworks in the light of recent developments in theories of games, oligopoly and industrial organization. The general results derived in this book on oligopoly with multi-product firms contain, as special cases, all previous results on oligopoly with single product as well as oligopoly with product differentiation and single product firms. A constructive nu- merical method is given for finding the Cournot-Nash equilibrium, which may be extremely valuable to those who are interested in numerical analysis of the effects of various industrial policies. A sequential adjustment process is also formulated for finding the equilibrium. Dynamic adjustment processes have two versions, one with a discrete time scale and the other with a continuous time scale. The stability of the equilibrium is thoroughly investigated utilizing powerful mathematical results from the stability and linear algebra literature. The methodology developed for analyzing stability proves to be useful for dynamic analysis of economic models.
