In this work, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics of low-dimensional strongly correlated quantum systems, which in our case are generated by sudden and time-dependent quantum quenches. Such non-equilibrium dynamics are a particularly difficult problem, because the time evolution of the initial many-body quantum state, which is governed by the post-quench Hamiltonian, is highly non-trivial. On top of that, applying an operator to this many-body quantum state in order to calculate its expectation values, typically creates an intricate set of excitations. Throughout the thesis, we furthermore contrast the results that we have obtained using exact numerical methods for two microscopic models, namely the Heisenberg and Fermi-Hubbard chains, with results derived from the Luttinger liquid theory, which, in equilibrium, describes the universal behavior of the two models. In the second part of the thesis, we reduce the dimensionality even further and employ complementary numerical and analytical tools to examine the unusual non-equilibrium behavior of a ring-shaped quantum impurity hosting interacting spin-less fermions.

The electronic structure of Mott systems continues to be an unsolved problem in physics despite more than half-century of intense research efforts. Well-developed momentum-resolved spectroscopies such as photoemission and neutron scattering cannot directly address problems associated with the full Mott gap as angle-resolved photoemission probes the occupied states and neutrons do not couple to the electron's charge directly. Our observation of dispersive particle- hole pair excitations across the charge gap (effective Mott gap) in several low dimensional prototype Mott insulators using high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering suggests that the excitations across the gap are highly anisotropic and momentum dependent. The results indirectly provide some information about the momentum dependence of unoccupied states in these correlated systems. The x-ray scattering results are complementary to the electron scattering results by the possibility of studying the excitations in the high momentum transfer regimes (near the zone boundaries and comers). This is also demonstrated in case of studying plasmons near the wave vector regime where Landau damping starts to dominate. X-ray scattering also allows one to probe the symmetry characters of localized electrons and the excitations through the strong polarization dependence of scattering near a core resonance. The study of charge-orbital localization is demonstrated in case of manganese oxides. Given its deeply bulk-sensitive and weak-coupling nature and the ability to probe dispersive behavior of charge fluctuations over several Brillouin zones, inelastic x-ray scattering shows the promise to become an important experimental tool to study the electronic structure of complex quantum systems.

This thesis is concerned with the numerical study of one-dimensional (1D) spin-1/2 quantum magnets and related method development. Its focus is on the calculation of dynamical spin correlation functions both at zero and finite temperature. This is motivated by the accessibility of dynamical quantities in experiments such as inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The numerical methods used in this thesis are based on extensions of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and are formulated in the framework of matrix product states (MPS). While zero-tempe...

This thesis shows how a combination of analytic and numerical techniques, such as a time dependent and finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) technique, can be used to obtain the physical properties of low dimensional quantum magnets with an unprecedented level of accuracy. A comparison between the theory and experiment then enables these systems to be used as quantum simulators; for example, to test various generic properties of low dimensional systems such as Luttinger liquid physics, the paradigm of one dimensional interacting quantum systems. Application of these techniques to a material made of weakly coupled ladders (BPCB) allowed the first quantitative test of Luttinger liquids. In addition, other physical quantities (magnetization, specific heat etc.), and more remarkably the spins-spin correlations – directly measurable in neutron scattering experiments – were in excellent agreement with the observed quantities. We thus now have tools to quantitatiively assess the dynamics for this class of quantum systems.

This doctoral thesis analytically and numerically examines some of the most important concepts in quantum correlations in low-dimensional physics: entanglement and out-of-equilibrium dynamics. As John Bell once said: "Entanglement expresses the spooky nonlocality inherent to quantum mechanics", and its study not only concerns the foundations of any quantum theory, but also has important applications in quantum information and condensed matter theory, amongst others. The first chapters are devoted to the study of "entanglement entropies", a popular measure of the "quantumness" of a physical system. The main focus of the analysis is the one-dimensional XYZ spin-1/2 chain in equilibrium, an interacting theory which in addition to being integrable also has interesting scaling limits, such as the sine-Gordon field theory. Moving away from equilibrium the subsequent chapters deal with the dynamics of quantum correlators after an instantaneous quantum quench. The emphasis is on two different models and techniques; the transverse field Ising chain is studied using the form-factor approach and the O(3) non-linear sigma model is studied by means of the semi-classical theory. In the final chapter the author highlights an important general result: in the absence of long-range interactions in the final Hamiltonian the dynamics of a quantum system are determined by the same statistical ensemble that describes static correlations.

This thesis analyzes some aspects regarding the dynamics of one-dimensional quantum systems which are driven out-of-equilibrium by the presence of time- dependent external fields. Among the possible kinds of driven systems, our focus is dedicated to the slow variation of a Hamiltonian's parameter across a quantum phase transition and to the case of a time-periodic forcing. To begin with, we prepare the background and the tools needed in the following. This includes a brief introduction to quantum critical models (in particular to the xy spin chain and to the Bose-Hubbard model), the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and Floquet theory. Next, we consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of Tonks-Girardeau gases in time-dependent harmonic trap potentials. The analysis is made with different techniques: perturbative expansions, numerical exact diagonalization and exact methods based on the theory of Ermakov-Lewis dynamical invariants. The last part of the thesis deals instead with the non-equilibrium dynamics of markovian open quantum systems subject to time-periodic perturbations of the system parameters and of the environment. This has led to an exact formulation of Floquet theory for a Lindblad dynamics. Moreover, within the Lindblad-Floquet framework it is possible to have an exact characterization ofthe finite-time operation of quantum heat-engines.
