During the last more than half a decade the Indian economy has been found in a rapidly moving growth trajectory with GDP growth mounting to more than 8% recently. Economic growth in general and that in the developing countries in particular, is supposedly a function of growing investment. Moreover, investment across various regions and states is also a pre-condition for balanced regional growth and quality of investment of the country concerned. In the light of the above, the present paper has made an attempt to examine the dynamics of investment across India. Considering the main three parameters of investment viz. investment intentions, implementations and implementation ratios, the present paper has made a region-wise and a state-wise analysis over a period of seven years i.e., from March 2004 to March 2010. It has been found that, contrary to the general belief that development is investment led, in India and in her various regions/states it has not been seen so. It has also emerged from the study that high investment attracting regions/states do not necessarily show high implementation ratios whereas low investment areas depict relatively better implementation of the acquired investment. The study concludes with suggesting a balanced growth of investment across regions, better infrastructure creation to sustain investment and caution for state governments to narrow down the gap between investment receipt and investment implementation.

During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

This book highlights various dimensions of human habitats in 21st Century India. The human habitats in the country are marked by perceptible inequality in social and economic spheres. This is occurring in tandem with rapid socio-economic transformation across both rural and urban landscapes. There is a plurality of transformative characteristics in terms of social and economic classes, gender and space. Inequality in access to natural resources such as land and water is still a big factor in socio-economic differentiation in rural habitats. This constructs a pedestal of unequal opportunities and access to basic human necessities such as healthcare, education, potable water and sanitation. Human habitats experiencing socio-spatial segregation and exclusion based on caste, community and gender are detrimental in formation of a civil society and its sustainability in long terms. The ideal situation for this would be formation of an inclusive society that celebrates age old socio-cultural diversities, reduces inequalities and reveres composite culture.
