Utopien bilden in der literarischen Moderne ein heiß umkämpftes Terrain. Dynamiken politischer Imagination rekonstruiert erstmals, wie die Gattung der Utopie zwischen 1848 und 1930 zu einem Schauplatz konkurrierender politischer Imaginationen wird und mehr als einmal verändernd auf die soziale Wirklichkeit einwirkt. In vier dichten Beschreibungen, die von den diskret formulierten Utopien des Realismus, über den Gattungsboom um 1900, die Ingenieurutopien im frühen 20. Jahrhundert bis zur Theoretisierung des Utopischen nach 1918 (Bloch, Mannheim, Musil) führen, richtet die Studie ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf große (Döblin, Stifter) und kleine Autoren sowie die zahlreichen Impulse, welche die deutschsprachige Utopie der amerikanischen, französischen und russischen Literatur verdankt. Die vorliegende Geschichte der modernen Utopie will schließlich mehr sein als 'nur' die einer literarischen Gattung und verspricht Aufschlüsse über ein kulturwissenschaftliches Problem von höherer Allgemeinheit: den Zusammenhang von Literatur und Politik. Sie lässt uns genauer sehen, welche Geschichten erzählt, welche Figuren erfunden und welche wissenschaftlichen Diskurse aufgerufen werden, um Menschen das Versprechen einer besseren Welt zu verheißen.

Since the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia more than 500 years ago, countless books have been written which describe a better world. But in film, positive utopias seem to be nonexistent. So far, research has focused almost exclusively on dystopias, since positive outlooks seem to run contrary to the media’s requirement. Utopias in Nonfiction Film takes a new approach; starting from the insight that literary utopias are first and foremost meant as a reaction to the ills of the present and not as entertaining stories, it looks at documentary and propaganda films, an area which so far has been completely ignored by research. Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most iconic, translated, and influential texts of the European Renaissance. This Handbook of specially commissioned and original essays brings together for the first time three different ways of thinking about the book: in terms of its renaissance contexts, its vernacular translations, and its utopian legacies. It has been developed to allow readers to consider these different facets of Utopia in relation to each other and to provide fresh and original contributions to our understanding of the book's creation, vernacularization, and afterlives. Anders als in der an technisch-wissenschaftlichen Innovationen ausgerichteten Science Fiction konstituiert sich das Möglichkeitsdenken im offenen Genre Zukunftsroman nur über den Faktor Zeit. So können in diesem 'offenenʻ Genre auch subjektive Identitätsentwürfe bzw. soziale Transdifferenzen imaginiert werden, die in einer ungewissen Gegenwart einen Spielraum epistemischer Experimente eröffnen, der idealisierte Lebensformen ebenso einschließt wie die Warnung vor politischen Verwerfungen und Klimakatastrophen. Das Buch geht über die kanonisierten Texte hinaus und thematisiert in kontextualisierenden Analysen auch Unbekanntes und Vergessenes, um der Dynamik dieser populärliterarischen Gattung nachzugehen.
