There was much popular support for Hitler's regime in Nazi Germany, and little widespread domestic opposition or resistance. However, a number of individuals amd small groups, from all sections of society, did engage in acts of public defiance or resistance against the regime. This opposition came from the Christian churches; communists, socialists and industrial workers; conservative groups; elements within the army; students and the German youth; and Jews. This book looks at the nature of this opposition and the historical debate surrounding it.

Small Navies written by Dr Deborah Sanders and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-28 with History categories.

Whilst maritime studies tend to reflect the dominance of large navies, history shows how relatively small naval forces can have a disproportionately large impact on global events. From Confederate commerce raiders in the nineteenth century, to Somali pirates today, even the most minor of maritime forces can become a key player on a global stage. Examining a broad range of examples, this volume addresses the roles and activities of small navies in the past and the present at the national, regional and international level. In particular, it focusses on the different ways in which such forces have identified and addressed national and international security challenges and the way in which they interact with other navies and security agencies. In addition the collection also investigates the relationship of such navies with non-governmental organisations, institutions and bodies in pursuit of broader maritime goals, be they political, financial or environmental. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach drawing on the best new research from the fields of international relations, security studies, strategic studies and maritime history, the book examines the diversity of experience amongst different smaller navies and also establishes areas of similarity. Divided into two sections, part one begins with a number of chapters that are theoretical in nature, whilst part two provides case studies that offer a more regional focus, including analysis of the challenges facing contemporary navies and historical case studies designed to reveal the experience of small navies over time. By adopting an approach that combines historical considerations with analysis of current events, the collection offers a unique perspective on the role that small navies have played in wider nautical affairs and their continued impact upon global maritime strategies.

Exodus written by Paul Collier and has been published by Penguin Classics this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Social Science categories.

Mass international migration is a response to extreme global inequality, and immigration has a profound impact on the way we live. Here, world-renowned economist Paul Collier seeks to defuse this explosive subject.Exoduslooks at how people from the world's poorest societies struggle to migrate to the rich West- the effects on those left behind and on the host societies, and explores the impulses and thinking that inform Western immigration policy. Migration, he concludes, is a fact, and we urgently need to think clearly about its possibilities and challenges- it is not a question of whether migration is good or bad, but how much is best? 'Paul Collier is one of the world's most thoughtful economists. His books consistently illuminate and provoke. Exodus is no exception.' Economist'For everyone on all sides of this contentious issue, Exodus is a 'must-read'.' Robert D. Putnam'A lively exploration of perhaps the most contentious issue of our age . . . the former World Bank economist thinks people are focusing on the wrong question. The key issue is not whether immigration is good or bad. He argues, instead, that we should focus on how much migration there should be and, more interestingly, who it really helps.'Ian Birrell, Observer'My political book of the year . . . Exodushas opened up the issue.' Melanie McDonagh, Spectator'Brave, fascinating . . . a frank dissection of the costs and benefits of immigration.' Rupert Edis, Sunday Telegraph'Exodus is not an effort to tell us what to think about immigration but an attempt to create a new framework for how we think about it . . . a voice to which it is worth paying attention.' Despite the government's continued insistence on linking desertion with cowardice, the motivations for desertion are many and complex, and are either rooted in or encouraged by military policy. This history and analysis of military desertion from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam and the occupation of Iraq describes the official policies on desertion and how they have been implemented over time; problems in the military justice system; and the motivations for desertions. Comprehensive data and interviews with deserters are included.

Nation And History written by Peter Brock and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with History categories.

The important scholarly achievements of Polish historians remain largely unknown outside Poland. In Nation and History, editors Peter Brock, John Stanley, and Piotr J. Wróbel have brought together twenty-four essays on Polish historians from the Enlightenment to the Second World War, an era of unparalleled changes in every aspect of Polish life. From the late eighteenth century until 1918, the Polish state was partitioned between its three neighbours: Russia, Prussia (Germany), and Austria. Polish historiography throughout this period tended to focus on the reasons behind the old Polish state's decline and fall. This shaped Polish historians' vision of their country's past and created the burden of not only having to discuss the state, but the issue of 'nation' - its essence, its shape, and its failure. The contributors to this volume - from Poland and abroad - closely examine the role played by historians in both the documenting and shaping of Poland's history. While featuring different approaches, Nation and History serves as the most comprehensive work on Polish historiography written in English.
