The essays in this volume address a very broad range of E. T. A. Hoffmann's most significant works, examining them through the lens of "transgression." His writings, perhaps more than those of any other German Romantic, portrayed the "dark side" of existence, which the following essays investigate for an Anglophone audience.

These essays by 14 Germanists, musicologists and ethnomusicologists are devoted to the topic of social dance as one of the literary motifs which became an indicator of social and societal sensibilities from the mid-18th century onwards. Individual studies of Hans Christian Andersen, Ludwig Achim von Arnim, Theodor Fontane, Heinrich Heine, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Thomas Mann, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean Paul, Arthur Schnitzler and Paul Valéry, examine the contexts in which the authors use dance in their works to reflect central experiences of festivities or of everyday life. Dance scenarios become keys to socio-cultural processes and personal conflicts. The essays also investigate the relevant experiences of the authors studied, who often adapted with critical distance to the canon of social norms surrounding dancing and balls into the 20th century. Most of the contributions here were discussed at a conference in Innsbruck in 2011, co-organised by the musicologist and doyen of dance research, Walter Salmen, who died in 2013. As yet unpublished studies on this theme by him appear in this volume, which is posthumously dedicated to him.

Writing The Mountains written by Jens Klenner and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-16 with Literary Criticism categories.

Writing the Mountains reconsiders the role of mountains in German language fiction from 1800 to the present and argues that in a range of texts, from E.T.A. Hoffmann's “Die Bergwerke zu Falun” (1819) to Elfriede Jelinek's Die Kinder der Toten (1995) and beyond, mountains serve as dynamic spaces of material change that generate aesthetic and narrative innovation. In contrast to dominant critical approaches to the Alpine landscape in literature, in which mountain ranges often features as passive settings, or which trace the influence of geographical and geological sciences in literary productions, this study argues for the dynamic role in literature of presumably rigid mineral structures. In German-language fiction after 1800, the counter-intuitive topology of rocky mountain ranges and unfathomable subterranean depths of the Alpine imaginary functions as a space of exception which appears to reconfirm and radically challenge the foundations of Enlightenment thought. Writing the Mountains reads the mountain range as a rigid yet permeable liminal space. Within this zone, semiotic orders are unsettled, as is the division between organic and inorganic, between the human and the other.
