Excerpt from The Early Romantic Drama at the English Court: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Perhaps it would not be out of place to add a word in explana tion of the reasons that led me to include a discussion of the play Common Conditions in a dissertation which purports to deal with the survival of mediaeval literary conventions in the sixteenth century court drama. If my conjecture be correct, the story upon which that play is based reached the dramatist not through mediaeval channels, but in the form of an Italian novella. Never theless, the story is characteristically mediaeval. The affiliation with the legend of St. Eustace and its analogues is sufficient proof of this. Furthermore, there could be no more striking indication of the strength of the heroic tradition in Elizabethan drama at this period than the care of the dramatist to supply whatever conventions were lacking in the narrative version. There is, to be sure, no direct evidence that Common Conditions was ever presented at Court; but in view of the extraordinary demand for acceptable drama, the assumption that so good a play was not over looked by the Master Of the Revels can hardly seem wholly unwar ranted. Besides, I should like to repeat that I make no claim for the court play as a distinct genre. It is the character of the drama during an important period in its history that we are interested in tracing; and, since Common Conditions is one of the few surviving representatives of the kind of dramatic activity with which this dissertation is concerned, its exclusion could hardly be demanded on strictly logical grounds. Excerpt from Essays on Chivalry, Romance, and the Drama The general practice of assigning some precise period when youths should be admitted into the society of the manhood of their tribe, and considered as entitled to use the privileges of that more mature class is common to many primitive nations. The custom, also, of marking the transition from the one state to the other, by some peculiar for mality and personal ceremonial, seems so very natural, that it is quite unnecessary to multiply instances, or crowd our pages with the bar barous names of the nations by whom it has been adapted. In the general and abstract definition of Chivalry, whether as comprising a body of men whose military service was on horseback, and who were invested with peculiar honours and privileges, or with reference to the mode and period in which these distinctions and privileges were con ferred, there is nothing either original or exclusively proper to our Gothic ancestors. It was in the singular tenets of Chivalry, - in the exalted, enthusiastic, and almost sanctimonious, ideas connected with its duties, - in the singular balance which its institutions offered against the evils of the rude ages in which it arose, that we are to seek those peculiarities which render it so worthy of our attention. To these is added the Ghost Seer, now for the first time given to the English public as Schiller wrote it. The Robbers is more strongly associated with the name and fame of Schiller than any other of his works, and is undoubtedly a very extraordinary production. "A strange, rugged, fiery melodrame, which seemed destined to announce and to animate the revolution of a world." "One sweeping, uncompromising defiance of the sober properties, in which the mature see decorum, and the young dissimulation."
