My mother's family history extends back to the early sixteenth-century England. William Short was born on March 3, 1613 in Brewood, Staffordshire and was a lower-level member of the English establishment. He received a land grant from the Crown and joined a privately-funded expedition as a young man and voyaged west to the New World. He landed at the colony of Virginia, so named by Walter Raleigh for his reigning monarch then known as the Virgin Queen Elizabeth. Walter Raleigh, although never traveling to the Virginia Colony, popularized smoking tobacco in the Virgin Queen's court. William Short died as a young man on April 6, 1659. He was married to Elizabeth Symonds, and they had two children. His will is recorded in Surry County, Virginia, and is one of the oldest to exist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. After the Short family gained a foothold in the New World, we look forward across more than six generations to 1819 and the birth of Burwell B. Short in Pittsylvania County. Burwell married Francis Ann George on February 7, 1848. They had eleven children, including my grandfather, Samuel David Short, who was born November 7, 1864 at the tail end of the American Civil War. Samuel David married Ella Jackson Scruggs in 1894 and worked as a tobacco farmer on the family homestead in Pittsylvania County. They raised a family of nine children, including my mother Fannie Janet, who was born on February 11, 1911. My mother married and had two sons. My last trip to the farm came when I was sixteen. I graduated from high school and served a tour in the United States Air Force before graduating from college and marrying my wife who is the daughter of a NASA scientist. His specialty was space science and applications with emphasis on sounding rockets. He explains that his sounding rockets will leave the solar system long after his demise and slice across our galaxy. They will enter the universe beyond and continue on an endless voyage long after he has passed sway. NDO, 1.27.18

Farm operations of today differ greatly from those of the early twentieth century. This book details the efforts required to produce successful farm results before the gasoline engine was available to ease the manual labor required for each daily task. The contents of this book looks back some sixty-five years in the life of a man who died in 1980, but recalls in detail what his life was like growing up on a 120 acre farm in the rolling hills of northeastern Missouri during his formative years between 1908 and 1918. In some 20,000 words he captures life in a period he called "The Last Decade of the Horse and Buggy Era." This is not a scholarly treatise carefully researched by historians, but rather a well written description of life as experienced by one who lived each day during each season of a farming cycle. He also details the social and holiday celebrations observed in the relatively small inward-looking community. If a reader ever wondered what living without central heating and cooling would be like, come along as this boy lives and works each day regardless of climate conditions--a day often beginning before sun-up and ending in the glow of moonlight. But it was not all work, there was time for formal schooling and quiet hours for simple game-playing and exploring the magic of books and magazines giving insight into the wonders of a world far beyond the twenty-five mile radius where he lived. The boy grew into an intelligent man who married and survived the Great Depression while supporting a family of five. Near the end of his life he spent hours recalling and writing those memories of early farm life as well as creating poetry and fictional short stories. He captured the love of his life at age 25 and many of those memories are detailed in letters between the two. His life was not spectacular or newsworthy, but his detailing of those early farm days expresses well to a reader how life has changed--not in a manner to make the nightly news but to softly show that life at that time was good.

The foods Kentuckians love to eat today -- biscuits and gravy, country ham and eggs, soup beans and cornbread, fried chicken and shucky beans, and fried apple pie and boiled custard -- all were staples on the Kentucky family farms in the early twentieth century. Each of these dishes has evolved as part of the farming lifestyle of a particular time and place, utilizing available ingredients and complementing busy daily schedules. Though the way of life associated with these farms in the first half of the twentieth century has mostly disappeared, the foodways have become a key part of Kentucky's cultural identity. In Food and Everyday Life on Kentucky Family Farms, 1920--1950, John van Willigen and Anne van Willigen examine the foodways -- the practices, knowledge, and traditions found in a community regarding the planting, preparation, consumption, and preservation -- of Kentucky family farms in the first half of the last century. This was an era marked by significant changes in the farming industry and un rural communities, including the introduction of the New Deal market quota system, the creation of the University of Kentucky Agricultural Extension Service, the expansion of basic infrastructures into rural areas, the increased availability of new technologies, and the massive migration from rural to urban areas. The result was a revolutionary change from family-based subsistence farming to market-based agricultural production, which altered not only farmers' relationships to food in Kentucky but the social relations within the state's rural communities. Based on interviews conducted by the University of Kentucky's Family Farm Project and supplemented by archival research, photographs, and recipes, Food and Everyday Life on Kentucky Family Farms, 1920--1950 recalls a vanishing way of life in rural Kentucky. By documenting the lives and experiences of Kentucky farmers, the book ensures that traditional folk and foodways in Kentucky's most important industry will be remembered.
