Excerpt from East Tennessee and the Civil War The object of the author in preparing this work was twofold: First, to rescue from oblivion certain important historical facts, fast fading from the memory of men, con nected with the struggle in East Tennessee from 1861 to 1865; secondly, to vindicate the course of the Union peo ple of East Tennessee in separating from their friends and kindred in the South, and in adhering to the National Government. Their constancy and fortitude, their trials and sufi'erings ror what they deemed right, have no paral lel in the history of this country. To present these in connected and permanent form it is believed will add a new and missing chapter to the history of the great drama known as the Civil War. Excerpt from Escape From East Tennessee to the Federal Lines: The History, Given as Nearly as Possible, by Captain R. A. Ragan, of His Individual Experiences During the War of the Rebellion From 1861 to 1864 I Lay no claim to literary attainments, but undertake to tell in simple words the story of my experiences, hardships and sufferings, lying out in the cold weather many nights, trying to make my way across the mountains and rivers to Kentucky, where the Union Army was encamped. There have been a number of books written since the Civil War, dealing with the loyalty, heroism and suffering of the Union people of East Tennessee during that period, but few men have given their individual experience from 1861 to 1864. I am, so far as I can ascertain, the only East Tennessee pilot living. I give the following names of those who piloted Union men through the lines: Daniel Ellis, James Lane, A. C. Fondren, James Kinser and David Fry. These men have all died since the War, except James Lane, who was killed at the foot of the Cumberland Mountain, in Powell's Valley, while conveying men to Kentucky. Excerpt from The East Tennessee Campaign, September, 1863 Chattanooga, the objective point of the campaign, was, in strategic importance, of more value to the Confederates than any other point that had surrendered to our victorious arms, with the possible exception of Vicksburg, for it was the key to the interior of the Confederacy, the converging point of the two greatest lines of railway that bore the Con federate supply trains to its armies in the East. It was the citadel of Georgia, the gateway to the South, thrown open by the prowess of the Army of the Cumberland, and held open by. The courage and brawn of its stalwart soldiers until the leisurely march of reinforcements enabled them to beat back the envious spectators of their occupancy of the stronghold, from the-heights of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.
