Excerpt: There have been numerous attempts to decipher the rongorongo script of Easter Island since its discovery in the late nineteenth century. As with most undeciphered scripts, many of the proposals have been fanciful. Apart from a portion of one tablet which has been shown to deal with a lunar calendar, none of the texts are understood, and even the calendar cannot actually be read. There are three serious obstacles to decipherment: the small number of remaining texts, comprising only 15,000 legible glyphs; the lack of context in which to interpret the texts, such as illustrations or parallels to texts which can be read; and the fact that the modern Rapanui language is heavily mixed with Tahitian and is unlikely to closely reflect the language of the tablets-especially if they record a specialized register such as incantations-while the few remaining examples of the old language are heavily restricted in genre and may not correspond well to the tablets either. Since a proposal by...

Words Out Of Wood written by M. de Laat and has been published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Two dozen or so wooden tablets discovered on Easter Island late in the nineteenth century are all that remain of rongorongo--a series of glyphs thought to be the writing system of the island's lost people. In Words Out of Wood, M. de Laat explores the construction and use of these enigmatic figures and makes a compelling case that rongorongo, despite its resistance to decipherment, constitutes nothing less than a fully developed script. Reproduced here in clear, full-page illustrations, the glyphs stand alongside the great moai statues as lasting monuments of the inventiveness and artistry of the remote Pacific island.

"Rapanui culture, famous world-over for its stone statues and platforms, made another extraordinary achievement – it developed its own writing system, the rongorongo script. This is the only pre-contact writing attested in the entire Polynesia. With about two dozens of objects bearing rongorongo glyphs known today, the corpus of Rapanui texts is very small. Thus, despite a considerable scientific attention enjoyed by this script since its discovery in the late 19th century, no definitive translation of rongorongo tablets was achieved yet. This book makes an attempt to improve documentation of rongorongo, placing the main emphasis on graphical and physical aspects of the problem. Shapes and surface features of the wooden objects themselves were analyzed, hoping to extract every detail that may possibly explain how these tablets were carved and used. According to the results of iconographic analysis, rongorongo signs are deeply rooted in the Rapanui aesthetics, representing the natural world surrounding the islanders and objects of their material culture. This result points to the local development of the script without any external influence. Paleographic analysis revealed many scribal corrections, abbreviations, truncation of repetitive passages, and even a possible margin note. All these details are completely natural and expected to appear in written documents, stating boldly that rongorongo indeed represents writing. The updated documentation offers a better look on the corpus, clearly showing that rongorongo phenomenon has far major depth and quality than it was previously thought. Much work remains to be done before the tablets could be actually read, but these temporary difficulties only multiply future joy of the day when the messages of the ancient Rapanui scribes will become finally understandable after over a century of silence." /
