Originally written in the First Century, A.D. by Asvaghosha. This may be the oldest known story of the complete life of Buddha, having been written in the first century AD. The author was an educated ecclesiastic Buddhist who traveled throughout India collecting stories and traditions relating to the Buddhas life. He was a famous preacher and musician who then wove them into a Sanskrit poem which he performed musically during his travels. The people of India delighted in this magical tale whenever it was performed with the choir of musicians who traveled with him. It holds many facts that other biographies or stories of the Buddha dont have, which makes this work so important. The entire epic is preserved in this rare book, long out of print, which may have otherwise been lost to the western world.

Kristang, or Papiah Kristang, is spoken by a small community in the Hilir suburb of Malacca, West Malaysia, and by descendants of the Malacca community elsewhere in Malaysia and in Singapore. Its origins reach back to Portugal's colonial endeavours of the sixteeth century, and its strong cultural traditions and capacity to assimilate outsiders have helped it survive through the centuries. Contrary to what has sometimes been claimed by lay authors, Kristang is not sixteenth-century Portuguese. Rather, it is a Creole language, a language born of the contacts between speakers of Portuguese and speakers of local and other languages. This dictionary of Kristang (Malacca Creole Portuguese) is the most exhaustive dictionary of the language yet published.

The second part addresses aspects of modern globalised yoga and its historical formation, as for example the emergence of yoga in Viennese occultism, the integration of yoga and nature cure in modern India, the eventisation of yoga in a global setting, and the development of Patañjali’s iconography. A productive and highly important branch of Nevari literature is poetry. The songs reflect the thought of the Nevars, their way of life, religious belief, their history and folklore. The greatest possible variety of genres and styles have been included in the present anthology. Most of the songs included, religious hymns as well as folksongs and ballads, are still very popular among Nevars. In order to facilitate reading and consultation, the whole corpus of the songs collected has been grouped into four principle sections, namely Religious Poetry, Songs about Love and Marriage, Epic Poetry, Didactic and Enigmatic Verses. The book contains two appendices. While the first lists the talas and ragas, as they are given in the various anthologies published in Nepal, the Second makes an attempt to transpose two songs into the European system of music. The translations are quite faithful and every effort has been made to preserve the spirit and flavour of the original. Contents Preface, Introduction, Translation, I. Religious Poetry: 1. Gender And Narrative In The Mahabharata written by Simon Brodbeck and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-09 with Religion categories.

The Sanskrit Mahabharata is one of the most important texts to emerge from the Indian cultural tradition. At almost 75,000 verses it is the longest poem in the world, and throughout Indian history it has been hugely influential in shaping gender and social norms. In the context of ancient India, it is the definitive cultural narrative in the construction of masculine, feminine and alternative gender roles. This book brings together many of the most respected scholars in the field of Mahabharata studies, as well as some of its most promising young scholars. By focusing specifically on gender constructions, some of the most innovative aspects of the Mahabharata are highlighted. Whilst taking account of feminist scholarship, the contributors see the Mahabharata as providing an opportunity to frame discussion of gender in literature not just in terms of the socio-historical roles of men and women. Instead they analyze the text in terms of the wider poetic and philosophical possibilities thrown up by the semiotics of gendering. Consequently, the book bridges a gap in text-critical methodology between the traditional philological approach and more recent trends in gender and literary theory. Gender and Narrative in the Mahabharata will be appreciated by readers interested in South Asian studies, Hinduism, religious studies and gender studies.
