I'm J.C Roberts, author of Eat Happy - How to Ease Depression and Improve Your Mood Through Diet. For years I had been fighting depression and angst. It seemed like there was no end in sight for the self-doubting crippling feelings tainting every stage of my life - the birth of my first child, advances in my career and other important milestones I should have been celebrating. But the reality was that these feelings made me feel that I was watching my life go by without enjoying any of it. It began to impact my health: stress levels built up to breaking point, I developed hypertension, experienced panic attacks for the first time and even when I was in a calm environment just found it impossible to feel "happy." I had everything anyone could ask for: a loving supportive family, enough financial security to not have to worry about missing a payment, and apart from my mental and emotional state, I was physically healthy. I knew I should feel grateful for everything in my life but it was like whatever it was in my body that was responsible for making me feel content was completely depleted and never to be seen again. I was desperate to know what I could do RIGHT NOW to just feel a bit happier again. So I got to work learning everything I could about how to feel content again. Here's what turned things around.I started to realise the importance of my diet in how I was feeling. During these years I would use food to feel rewarded - the kind of food that's too salty, too fatty, too sweet and ever so tantalising. Almost always I would end up feeling worse after eating, as not only did it make me feel lethargic and queasy, I was disappointed in myself for doing it over an over again after vowing each time that I'd break the habit. My research uncovered how powerful a diet can be in replenishing your happiness meter. After just trying to stick to a anti-depression meal plan for 1 week I noticed I laughed more, reacted calmly to situations that would otherwise have had my face in my hands, weighed less and finally felt like there was light at the end of this dark, long tunnel. It felt like a weight had been lifted, a light had turned on, a corner turned. And the answer was in front of me and easily achievable the whole time.I wrote this book to share that same meal plan with you. If you're someone who experience the same feelings and want to change, then in this book you will find the very same weekly plan complete with recipes that is not only delicious but allowed feelings of happiness, contentment and calm to come back into my life. Also included are in depth studies on nutrition, eating habits and best practices to maximise the anti-depression effect these practices will have on your mental health.I do hope you enjoy Eat Happy - How to Ease Depression and Improve Your Mood Through Diet, and that it can help you in your quest to live a better, happier life.Be blessed, J.C. Roberts

Improve your mental health and make yourself happier with this mood-boosting, life-changing, holistic nutritional plan that includes recipes, advice, and the science behind it from an internationally bestselling author and a nutritional therapist. Eat better, feel better! There’s a reason that our stomachs are often referred to as our second brains: the gut is responsible for producing around 90 percent of a person’s serotonin, the chemical responsible for making you feel good. Since suffering from her last serious bout of depression in 2011, bestselling author and mental health advocate Rachel Kelly has developed a broad holistic approach to staying healthy and happy, and the heart of her recovery process involves a crucial shift in diet. Over the past five years, Kelly has worked with nutritionist Alice Mackintosh to identify the foods that either drag us down or lift us up. Together, they have built up a repertoire of over five-dozen recipes that target particular symptoms, from insomnia and mood swings to anxiety and exhaustion. In this bright, warm, beautifully designed cookbook with chapters ranging from Steady Energy and Beating the Blues to Hormonal Peace and Finding Comfort, they put all the theories into practice, explaining how you can incorporate these changes seamlessly into your daily life. Along with fantastic recipes and daily meal planners, each chapter features informative introductions explaining the nutritional science behind their advice. The Happiness Diet also offers cheat sheets of essential foods to incorporate into your diet, with comforting thoughts and inspirational quotes. Follow the advice in these pages, and even if it’s the only life change you make, you will begin to feel stronger and lighter with each passing week. Happy eating!

How to fix the Modern American Diet and reclaim our minds and waistlines “An insightful, eye opening adventure into diet and nutrition. Concise and witty, this book kept me engaged from cover to cover. A must-have for anyone serious about getting happy and healthy naturally.”—Andrew Morton, MD, Board-certified Family Physician; Former Medical Corps, US Navy and Army Infantry Medic, Desert Storm For the first time in history, too much food is making us sick. The Modern American Diet (MAD) is expanding our waistlines while starving and shrinking our brains. Rates of obesity and depression have recently doubled, and though these epidemics are closely linked, few experts are connecting the dots for the average American. Using data from the rapidly changing fields of neuroscience and nutrition, The Happiness Diet shows that over the past several generations, small, seemingly insignificant changes to our diet have stripped it of nutrients—like magnesium, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D, as well as some very special fats—that are essential for happy, well-balanced brains. These shifts also explain the overabundance of mood-destroying foods in the average American’s diet and why they predispose most of us to excessive weight gain. After a clear explanation of how we’ve all been led so far astray, The Happiness Diet empowers the reader to steer clear of this MAD way of life with simple, straightforward solutions, including: • A list of foods to swear off • Shopping tips and kitchen organization tricks • A compact healthy cookbook full of brain-building recipes • Practical advice, meal plans, and more! Graham and Ramsey guide you through these steps and then remake your diet by doubling down on feel-good foods—even the all-American burger. Praise for The Happiness Diet “Finally, a rock-solid, reliable, informative, and entertaining book on how to eat your way to health and happiness. Run—don’t walk—to read and adopt The Happiness Diet. This is the only diet book I’ve encountered that I can actually recommend to patients without reservation.”—Bonnie Maslin, PhD, Psychologist and author of Picking Your Battles “A lively, thorough, and iron-clad case for real food. You will never eat an egg-white omelet or soy protein shake again.”—Nina Planck, author of Real Food and Real Food for Mother and Baby “The book includes food lists, shopping tips, brain-building recipes, smart slimming strategies, and other useful tools to lose weight and keep the blues at bay.”—AM New York
