Excerpt from Echoes of Memory The poems of my first book covered a period of years from my boyhood until my sixty-seventh year (a selection only of what I had produced). Those of echoes OF memory, excepting half a dozen, have been since that time, never having appeared before except a few in local newspapers. I seek not, neither have I sought financial gain in the production of my work in book form, neither have I cribbed from others. I have rhymed simply for the pleasure it gave; if my friends take as much enjoyment in reading as I have in the writing my reward will be complete. Excerpt from Echoes of Childhood: Old Friends in New Costumes, for the Risen and the Rising Generation Oh what a tangled web we weave When first we practise to deceive. Peter Parley says: By a beautiful alchemy of the heart, the Clouds of early life appear afterward to be only accessories to the universal Springtide of pleasure. In early life all nature is poetry. Childhood and youth are indeed one continuous poem. In most cases this ecstasy of emotion and conception passes away without our special notice. A large portion of it dies out from the memory, but pages are written upon the heart in lines of light and power that cannot be effaced. These become woven into the texture of the soul, and give character to it for time, perchance for eternity. The whole fountain of the mind, like some mineral spring reaching to the interior elements of the earth, is imbued with ingredients which make its current sweet or bitter forever. The contributions of this volume discuss the interfaces between memory and emotions in ancient literature, social life, and philosophy. They explore the ways in which memories intersect with emotions in the epics of Homer and Virgil, the importance of memory for the emotions scripts employed by public speakers to enhance the persuasiveness of their arguments, and ‘cultural memory’ in Philostratus’ Heroicus. Contributions that focus on aspects of ancient societies and politics investigate memory and emotions in the Bacchic-Orphic gold leaves, the importance of memories on inscriptions commemorating private and public emotions, and the ways in which emotive memories enhanced the monumentalizing project of Herodes Atticus in Greece. The essays emphasizing philosophical approaches to memory and emotions discuss Aristotle’s biological treatises and Augustine’s deployment of nostalgia and autobiographical narrative in the wider frame of his didactic programme. Modern approaches to embodied cognition are also employed to shed light on how memories attached to our bodily experiences can enhance the interpretation of Roman literature.

Cognition And Emotion written by Eric Eich and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-08-24 with Psychology categories.

Recent years have witnessed a revival of research in the interplay between cognition and emotion. The reasons for this renaissance are many and varied. In the first place, emotion theorists have come to recognize the pivotal role of cognitive factors in virtually all aspects of the emotion process, and to rely on basic cognitive factors and insight in creating new models of affective space. Also, the successful application of cognitive therapies to affective disorders has prompted clinical psychologists to work towards a clearer understanding of the connections between cognitive processes and emotional problems. And whereas the cognitive revolutionaries of the 1960s regarded emotions with suspicion, viewing them as nagging sources of "hot" noise in an otherwise cool, rational, and computer-like system of information processing, cognitive researchers of the 1990s regard emotions with respect, owing to their potent and predictable effects on tasks as diverse as object perception, episodic recall, and risk assessment. These intersecting lines of interest have made cognition and emotion one of the most active and rapidly developing areas within psychological science. Written in debate format, this book covers developing fields such as social cognition, as well as classic areas such as memory, learning, perception and categorization. The links between emotion and memory, learning, perception, categorization, social judgements, and behavior are addressed. Contributors come from the U.S., Canada, Australia, and France.
