Le design industriel prend en compte l’usage et l’expérience de l’utilisateur (Contexte) pour proposer un concept de produit (fonctionnalités, forme, esthétique, usage, etc.), sur la base d’un problème « mal défini » ou « mal structuré ». Le design industriel cherche une solution globale au problème avant de l’affiner pour proposer la solution définitive. L’éco-conception, quant à elle, permet d’identifier des variantes permettant de maîtriser les impacts environnementaux à partir d’idées initiales de produits ou propose des pistes d’amélioration de produits existants. On identifie le problème, décomposé en sous problèmes plus évidents auxquels on recherchera des sous-solutions. L’agrégation des sous-solutions en une unité cohérente permettra d’obtenir la solution finale. Les démarches d’éco-conception inversent la logique du management de projet (choix des objectifs stratégiques puis des outils pour les atteindre). Elles permettent rarement l’intégration et l’apport des autres compétences du projet, notamment stratégiques, ce qui ne facilite pas la prise de décision stratégique et financière. L’éco-conception répond à des enjeux propres à l’entreprise (image, finance, mobilisation en interne, réduction de son impact). Notre hypothèse est que l’approche, les méthodologies et outils de l’éco-conception ne correspondent pas aux modes de faire de l’activité de design. La compétence design est supposée véhiculer les valeurs d’usage et la vision du contexte-produit nécessaire au développement efficient des produits. Aujourd’hui, les designers explorent les actions environnementales, sociales et sociétales. Toutefois, notre seconde hypothèse est que le design ne s’implique pas encore réellement dans la prise en compte des aspects environnementaux et sociétaux, et qu’il ne dispose pas d’outils permettant d’évaluer et de permettre une reconnaissance de ses actions de prise en compte de l’environnement. L’observation et l’analyse de 26 démarches d’éco-conception, menées par des entreprises, montre l’absence de prise en compte de l’utilisateur dans la majorité de ces démarches. Cela nous permet de valider notre première hypothèse. Notre troisième hypothèse est que la présence du design au sein de démarche d’écoconception permettrait d’intégrer les valeurs d’usage, afin d’apporter une plus grande différenciation du produit, et une plus grande homogénéité des actions menées au sein de l’entreprise. Les démarches intégrant l’action du design mettent en œuvre des avancées innovantes qui dépassent la simple mise en conformité pour plus d’anticipation, mais surtout les entrainent vers des démarches prospectives. Une expérimentation « Cradle to Cradle Design© » dans les entreprises ou les designers étaient chefs de projet nous a permis de valider cette troisième hypothèse en montrant la capacité du design à changer le paradigme économique et le business modèle de l’entreprise. On constate la capacité du design à mobiliser tous les acteurs et compétences du projet (sur l’ensemble de la « supply chain », chaine de valeur) vers des problématiques court, moyen et long terme, et sur des sujets innovant tel que le service, l’identité, la toxicité, Le style de vie durable, La valeur de la matière, etc.). Cela nous amène à définir notre question de recherche : Comment permettre l’implication des designers dans les projets de développement de produits et services écoresponsables, dans l’objectif de réintégrer la valeur d’usage ? Avant de pouvoir intégrer les aspects environnementaux et sociétaux dans sa démarche, le designer industriel doit tout d’abord acquérir les compétences environnementales et sociétale nécessaires à sa présence et son action au sein des démarches de développement de produits responsables. Ainsi, nous proposons une Méthode d’Orientation au Design Responsable (MOD-R) permettant de déterminer les actions du design responsable, de faire appel à des outils spécifiques à sa fonction afin de lui permettre d’apporter une réponse responsable. Notre méthode considère que les actions du design responsable « progressent » : elles s’intéressent tout d’abord au contexte du projet pour finalement aborder le bien ou le service. Elles sont rassemblées autour de trois stratégies que sont le style de vie, la consommation et le bien (ou service). Elle permet, à partir de connaissances et d’objectifs environnementaux, sociaux et sociétaux, la mise en œuvre d’une activité de design responsable. Elle intègre aux outils du design un certain nombre d’actions ou de compléments s’intégrant aux différentes étapes. Le résultat de l’activité de design responsable permet d’accroitre ses propres connaissances en design responsables ou, si le résultat n’est pas en conformité avec la demande, de réévaluer ses objectifs initiaux.

Up to now, environmental policies have relied mainly on rules, regulations, and prohibitions. This kind of environmental policy -- a clearly reactive approach – has shown a mounting array of limitations. There is a clear need to seek new solutions, in particular those involving the initiative of firms themselves. Since the mid-1980’s, a new approach called “environmental management” has been established in research and practical applications; it is designed to systematically integrate environmental considerations into company activities. If, for instance, environmental objectives are being formulated for an enterprise, it is imperative to identify, highlight, and analyze real and significant environmental impacts of the firm's activities and to take appropriate measures to improve its performance. Controlling and implementing these environmental objectives requires suitable structures, procedures, and tools. Many motivated companies have approached the issue of environmental management through incorporating methods such “continual improvement processes” and “Life Cycle Assessment” into the various operational activities of the enterprise. Some firms initiated such transformation processes at their own production sites because it was easier to identify their own environmental impacts than to analyze, let alone mitigate, the effects of upstream and downstream processes. However, in many cases these processes are decisive factors in the overall environmental performance of a product. It has become clear that product design can influence these processes to a great extent.
