Discernir e analisar as intrínsecas e mútuas implicações entre desafios postos pelo novo paradigma ecológico e questões provenientes da perspectiva oferecida pela "viragem decolonial" é o objetivo deste livro. Como uma trama, enredada em torno de seis capítulos, este livro reúne textos concebidos sob a ótica da ecoteologia, isto é, daquele discurso teológico que procura potencializar ao máximo a reciprocidade das relações entre o grito dos pobres e os gemidos da Terra. Neste sentido, o discurso aqui apresentado parte do pressuposto de que a injustiça social e a crise ambiental ou climática são provocadas por um sistema de morte, deflagrado como produto de um paradigma civilizacional, caracterizado pelo poder hegemônico do mercado, da tecnociência e da mídia. A reflexão aqui desenvolvida se inspira na utopia de um novo e emergente paradigma, o ecológico. Este se encontra ainda em fase de gestação, mas seus rebentos se revelam cada vez mais promissores. Fruto de um novo olhar, as novas relações propiciadas pelo emergente paradigma ecológico seriam caracterizadas pelos valores da complexidade, do cuidado e da sustentabilidade, entre outros. Por fim, o autor partilha com o leitor uma convicção que foi se impondo sempre mais no decorrer da confecção deste livro: a consciência de que desafios complexos postulam práticas e saberes integrais.

É para cuidar da ferida aberta pelas inúmeras crises engendradas pelo sistema capitalista que o martinicano Malcom Ferdinand propõe uma ecologia decolonial, uma abordagem interseccional extremamente sagaz que reúne o ecológico com o pensamento decolonial, antirracista, em uma crítica contundente ao "habitar colonial da Terra". Nesta análise urgente, Ferdinand critica o que chama de "dupla fratura colonial e ambiental da modernidade", de que resultam, por um lado, as teorias ecologistas que desconsideram o legado do colonialismo e da escravidão; por outro, os movimentos sociais e antirracistas que negligenciam a questão animal e ambiental. Como mostra o autor, tal fratura só enfraquece as demandas desses movimentos, uma vez que a exploração do ser humano e da natureza caminham lado a lado. Para tanto, escolhe como centro de seu pensamento as regiões caribenhas, com seus modos de vida crioulos e suas formas de resistência – entre elas a marronagem, uma estratégia de aquilombamento para fora do mundo colonial. Com um prefácio de Angela Davis que situa historicamente o conceito de justiça ambiental, esta obra oferece uma aproximação para pensar um naviomundo que não mais atire algumas pessoas no porão, condenandoas a uma sobrevida precária sujeita a doenças, fome e morte, enquanto oferece a outras a perspectiva de uma viagem segura e lucrativa no convés, possibilitada justamente pelo assujeitamento daqueles no porão. The world is in the midst of a storm that has shaped the history of modernity along a double fracture: on the one hand, an environmental fracture driven by a technocratic and capitalist civilization that led to the ongoing devastation of the Earth’s ecosystems and its human and non-human communities and, on the other, a colonial fracture instilled by Western colonization and imperialism that resulted in racial slavery and the domination of indigenous peoples and women in particular. In this important new book, Malcom Ferdinand challenges this double fracture, thinking from the Caribbean world. Here, the slave ship reveals the inequalities that continue during the storm: some are shackled inside the hold and even thrown overboard at the first gusts of wind. Drawing on empirical and theoretical work in the Caribbean, Ferdinand conceptualizes a decolonial ecology that holds protecting the environment together with the political struggles against (post)colonial domination, structural racism, and misogynistic practices. Facing the storm, this book is an invitation to build a world-ship where humans and non-humans can live together on a bridge of justice and shape a common world. In The Extractive Zone Macarena Gómez-Barris traces the political, aesthetic, and performative practices that emerge in opposition to the ruinous effects of extractive capital. The work of Indigenous activists, intellectuals, and artists in spaces Gómez-Barris labels extractive zones—majority indigenous regions in South America noted for their biodiversity and long history of exploitative natural resource extraction—resist and refuse the terms of racial capital and the continued legacies of colonialism. Extending decolonial theory with race, sexuality, and critical Indigenous studies, Gómez-Barris develops new vocabularies for alternative forms of social and political life. She shows how from Colombia to southern Chile artists like filmmaker Huichaqueo Perez and visual artist Carolina Caycedo formulate decolonial aesthetics. She also examines the decolonizing politics of a Bolivian anarcho-feminist collective and a coalition in eastern Ecuador that protects the region from oil drilling. In so doing, Gómez-Barris reveals the continued presence of colonial logics and locates emergent modes of living beyond the boundaries of destructive extractive capital.

In Decolonial Ecologies: The Reinvention of Natural History in Latin American Art, Joanna Page illuminates the ways in which contemporary artists in Latin America are reinventing historical methods of collecting, organizing, and displaying nature in order to develop new aesthetic and political perspectives on the past and the present. Page brings together an entirely new corpus of artistic projects from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru that engage critically and creatively with forms as diverse as the medieval bestiary, baroque cabinets of curiosities, atlases created by European travellers to the New World, the floras and herbaria composed by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century naturalists, and the dioramas designed for natural history museums. She explores how artists develop decolonial and post-anthropocentric perspectives on the collections and expeditions that were central to the evolution of European natural history. Their works forge a critique of the rationalizing approach to nature taken by modern Western science, reconnecting it with forms of popular, indigenous and spiritual knowledge and experience that it has systematically excluded since the Enlightenment. A luta de mulheres por igualdade ou pelo fim da violência contra o gênero feminino faz parte de séculos da história da humanidade. Se a resposta for positiva, isso ocorre de maneira igual entre todas as mulheres? Diante disso, filósofas ecofeministas buscam respostas a esses questionamentos e elaboram teorias capazes de solucioná-los. This book probes the interconnections of time and ecology in order to spark our imagination and inspire us to re-think the planetary, ecology, and otherwise. It presents debates that interrogate and elucidate the anxieties of the known and the unknown of this world and the planetary beyond, sifting through temporal accounts of the Anthropocene, human beings, and climate change. The chapters in this edited volume spur conversations with different thought systems and their underlying assumptions about the composition of structures of time and contingent temporalities. The authors engage rising temperatures in the oceans and air, the consequences, intended and unintended, of investments in various forms of "development", and the potential catastrophe unfolding in real time. Recent temporal strategies such as mitigation and adaptation to the "climate crisis" are challenged as they further compound and commodify the inquiry, the understanding and responses to environmental degradations, extractions, and displacements. Anti-colonial and decolonial debates about the structures of time, the planetary, and ecology are crucial contributions of this volume. Further, privileging the vantage points of the colonized and enslaved, the authors of this volume challenge dominant universal, cyclical, and retrospective structures of time and the planetary. Through research, poetry, art, and popular cultural analyses, the authors attend to the ways that the struggles of the "submerged," indigenous and black communities for climate justice become coded as a global warming crisis. This volume grapples with how racial climate struggles and unrest become mobilized both as a source of paralysis and as an opportunity for further expropriation and expansion of data accumulation markets for settler planetary projects all in the name of global warming. Ultimately, the authors in this volume argue that conventional attempts at exploiting the planetary all depend upon ideas of conquest and the mastery and control of ecologies, global governance, and individual behaviors. In this sense, fears about the unknown future of our planet miss what is at stake in the structures of time, the question of creation and invention. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal, Globalizations.
