Divulgados periodicamente desde a década de 1990 pelo Painel Intergovernamental sobre a Mudança do Clima (IPCC, na sigla em inglês), relatórios científicos informam sobre a elevação da temperatura média da superfície da Terra da ordem de pouco menos de 1 grau Celsius nos últimos cem anos. As pesquisas e observações do IPCC indicam que esse aumento deriva, diretamente, das atividades humanas, principalmente das que envolvem a queima de petróleo e de carvão, emitindo os chamados gases de efeito estufa (GEE). Embora predominante, esse entendimento não é, porém, unânime, pois vários argumentos dessa abordagem são refutados por outros modelos, que apontam causas naturais para a variação do clima no planeta. O imbróglio do clima: ciência, política e economia apresenta o estágio atual dessas discussões, fazendo também a correlação entre os informes do IPCC e as estratégias de desenvolvimento que as alterações climáticas poderiam, no futuro, condicionar no globo.
