Os autores sempre tiveram como objectivo estratégico ensinar estas matérias na FEP por forma a que pudessem ser úteis para a compreensão da importância que a economia monetária tem na condução da política económica nos nossos dias. Por isso, este manual está não só perfeitamente actualizado em qualquer dessas duas vertentes como é exaustivo na cobertura dos principais tópicos. Da sua leitura resulta igualmente um conhecimento aprofundado do funcionamento dos Bancos Centrais, enquanto autoridades monetárias, com especial ênfase no caso do Banco Central Europeu e, também, da Reserva Federal dos Estados-Unidos da América. A formalização deveras contida com que este manual é construído não é impeditiva da boa compreensão das matérias abordadas por parte daqueles que são menos versados na linguagem matemática, tanto mais que o estilo da escrita é claro e conciso. Ademais, os vários exemplos que se vão dando e resolvendo ao longo de todo o texto são igualmente um instrumento efectivo para a boa compreensão dos assuntos tratados.
