For historical and socio-economic reasons, the countries of the southern Black Sea region are facing mounting and apparently intractable problems in managing their solid waste, with increasingly serious implications for public health and quality of life, as well as the wider socio-economic development of the region. Hitherto, no comprehensive, systematic study of the problem seems to have been conducted, to determine the underlying causes and suggesting how it might be alleviated in socially and economically viable ways, aiming at sustainability. The present book analyzes the causes of the poor state of solid waste management in the region, identifying feasible modalities with which at least a degree of sustainability could be achieved in the management of the region's solid waste. Readership: Environmental managers, scientists, planners, policy makers, technical and investment consultants, businesses and other enterprises and institutions concerned with sustainable solid waste management in the region.

This paper provides an overview of global solid waste generation, its environmental costs, and fiscal instruments that can be used to encourage waste reduction and finance proper disposal. Countries—especially island nations--struggle to manage an ever-increasing volume of solid waste, generation of which is projected to exceed 2 billion tons a year by 2025. Although solid waste management is usually relegated to subnational governments, externalities from inadequate management, which include greenhouse gas emissions and ocean plastic pollution, reach global scale. National governments thus play a critical role in creating incentives for waste minimization and ensuring adequate resources for proper waste management. This paper evaluates potential fiscal instruments to achieve these goals, particularly in developing country policy environments.

Anthology from the year 2020 in the subject Environmental Sciences, , language: English, abstract: Contamination of the world's oceans due to marine debris, especially human-engineered materials, is a global problem and a challenge for many countries, especially those with coastal communities. Marine debris has entered a new chapter since the international and national conferences were held since the 1950s. The UN (United Nation) in the environmental sector is known to explicitly state that marine debris has damaged the seas an oceans for a long time and has an impact on all areas of life. Currently, more than 1.2 trillion plastic bags are used every year around the world for daily needs. About 2 million plastic bags are used every minute worldwide and around 32 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually, representing 12.7% of total solid waste. Every resident in Indonesia produces an average of 800 plastic bags per year. This means that the use of plastic has become a necessity for humans. However, it is not balanced with a reduction or how it can be reused. Poor waste management, especially in developing countries, is one problem/challenge that must be addressed by the government. Almost all developing countries do not have complete infrastructures and legal regulations for waste management. For example, in a country like Indonesia, the recycling rate of waste is low at under 50%. The awareness not to litter is also a cause for concern. Garbage is easily found in gutters, roads, rivers, and coasts.
