Wetlands are among the most productive life-supporting systems of the world with immense socio-economic, ecological and bio-aesthetic importance. They are also one of the most threatened habitats in the world, facing degradation due to ill-planned urbanization, industrialization and encroachments. Wetlands are very sensitive and valuable ecosystems that are subject to much stress from human activities. The study presented here has developed an innovative triple layer framework for analysis of wetland management. This approach provides support for spatial matching between physical planning, hydrological and ecological processes, and economic activities. The authors describe how integrated modelling at the regional scale can be achieved in practice. Following an introduction to wetlands, theoretical aspects of the contributing disciplines are discussed, as well as various aspects of integrated and spatial modelling. An applied integrated assessment of spatial wetland management for the Vecht area between Amsterdam and Utrecht is then presented. This assessment has resulted in a set of linked hydrological, ecological and economic models, formulated at the level of grids and polders, and various types of evaluations and rankings of scenarios. The results indicate the value of maintaining spatial detail for as long as possible.

The Ecosystem Services (ES) program within Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) has been advancing the use of an ES Approach within the department since 2007. The Ecosystem Services Approach Pilot on Wetlands (the ES Pilot) is part of the Department's 10-year ES Roadmap; its completion and results are considered a progression in understanding and applying an ES Approach to support decision making. This technical report was prepared for the ES Pilot team members, technical professionals, and other target groups/individuals with interests in economic valuation. This valuation research also served to build knowledge and capacity in economic analysis techniques within the department. This report documents the approaches undertaken by the Socio-econ Sub-team to conduct economic valuations and deliver major deliverables and to discuss the links of economic valuation to wetland decision making.
