Among the many factors governing migration, education plays a major role, though more in the long run than for short-term floods particularly of irregular migration. Concerning the long run effects, the direction of causation and the slope of the connection are debated in theory. Education not only determines the mobility of people, it also is positively correlated with rising incomes. Empirical evidence shows that for people in developing countries, who are at the low end of the income distribution, more education and rising income levels are push factors for emigration. However, beyond a certain threshold further rising incomes tend to retard migration. As a result, education exhibits an inverted-U shaped relationship with migration. Another remarkable fact is that, on average, people who migrate are better educated than non-migrants back home as well as indigenous people in the host country.

The primacy of education in development agendas is unquestioned. With the gradual acknowledgement of the potential benefits that migration can hold for development, the relationship between migration and education is a growing area of research. Migration, Education and Socio-Economic Mobility explores how the decisions people make in terms of both their migration choices and educational investments, mediated as they are by gender, class, caste and nationality, can potentially contribute to earning incomes, building social and symbolic capital, or reshaping gender relations, all elements contributing to the process of economic and social mobility. Much of the existing literature examining the links between migration and education focuses either on the investment of migrant remittances in the education of their children back home or on ‘brain drain’ that refers to the migration of skilled workers from the developing to the developed world. Most of these discussions are firmly rooted in materialist arguments and while undeniably important, tend to underplay the social processes through which migration and education interact to shape people’s lives, identities and status in society. Along with economic security, people also aspire to social mobility and status enhancement. The ideas presented in this book take a more varied and nuanced view of the relationship between education and migration. The interrelationship between migration and household education, depending on certain socioeconomic circumstances, is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. Migration contributes to the household education through both social and economic remittances. Moreover, the circumstances like urban and rural set up may also have an influence on educational attainment of the households because both have different educational infrastructures. Likewise, from a better destination, people can bring economic and social remittances that can have an influence on education. Hence, the migration-education relationship is more multifaceted than the migration-wellbeing relationship. It is, therefore, difficult to draw a straightforward conclusion about the link between migration and education without assessing other decisive factors, e.g. social and economic remittances. Under the aforesaid circumstances, this study aims at understanding the implications of remittances on household education from a holistic perspective, therefore, divided into two separate parts, the quantitative and the qualitative one. I used the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2010 dataset of Bangladesh for the quantitative analysis by focusing on the economic remittances, where the outcome variables are, the per capita education expenditure and the average years of schooling. To examine the implication of economic remittances, a comparison is drawn between the households having a migrant member and households having no migrant member. I introduced a distinction between international and internal migration, and also investigated if the type of migration (i.e. internal or international) matters for the effect of migration on education outcomes. The study found that households having a migrant member invest more in the household education compared to the households having no migrant member. Furthermore, this study explores the role of educational infrastructure on the household education outcome. By investing more in childrens education, the households are trying to build a human capital that can help diversifying the risks and secure the future household income. The outcome of this study supports the livelihood theory (Ellis, 1998) and the New Economics of Labor Migration (NELM) theory (Stark, 1991). In addition to economic remittances, I have addressed the effects of social remittances, including attitude, knowledge and skills, learned by the migrants from the host countries on childrens education. To do so, I have interviewed the returnees from Malaysia and the Middle East comprehensively. The findings indicate that the social remittances have influences on childrens education and these findings support the theory of social remittances by Levitt (1998). This study attempts to address the role of social and economic remittances on education, from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, complementing each other. But the quantitative and qualitative parts of the analysis are not used for triangulation purpose. Hence, this study is expected to contribute to the existing literature on the migration-education nexus
