In this paper, we conduct an empirical study of the effect of uncertainty on fertility. The precautionary motive for saving predicts that an increase in uncertainty increases saving by reducing both consumption and fertility. We use a new measure of uncertainty, the World Uncertainty Index, and focus on data from 126 countries for the period from 1996 to 2017. The empirical findings indicate that uncertainty shocks decrease the fertility rate. This evidence is robust to different model specifications and econometric techniques as well as to the inclusion of various controls.

"Why do some people have children early, while others delay reproduction? By considering the trade-offs using one's resources for reproduction versus other tasks, the evolutionary framework of life-history theory predicts that reproductive timing should be influenced by economic uncertainty and childhood resource scarcity. In this paper, we examined how economic uncertainty cues influence the desire to have children. Results showed that the effects of economic uncertainty were contingent on whether people grew up in a relatively resource-scarce or resource-plentiful environment. For individuals who grew up relatively poor, economic uncertainty cues generated a desire to reproduce sooner - to want children now, even at the cost of furthering one's education or career. Conversely, for individuals growing up relatively wealthy, economic uncertainty cues ignited a desire to delay reproduction - to further one's education or career before starting a family. Overall, economic uncertainty cues appear to shift individuals into different life-history strategies as a function of childhood socioeconomic status, suggesting important implications for how environmental factors can influence fertility and family size" -- Abstract.

Using the US Census waves 1940-1990 and Current Population Surveys 1990-2010, we look at how economic uncertainty affected fertility cycles over the course of the XXth century. We use cross-state and cross-cohort variation in the volatility of income growth to identify the causal link running from uncertainty to completed fertility. We find that economic uncertainty has a large and robust negative effect on fertility. This finding contributes to the unraveling of the determinants of the post-WWII baby boom. Specifically, the difference in economic uncertainty endured by women born in 1910 compared to that faced by women born in 1935 accounts for between 45% and 61% of the one child variation across these cohorts. We hypothesize that a greater economic uncertainty increases the risk of large consumption swings, which individuals mitigate by marrying later, postponing fertility, and ultimately decreasing their completed fertility.

This paper examines the determinants of fertility, using panel data for twenty-seven European countries. We employ panel co-integration to estimate fertility as function of demographic and economic variables. We show that low fertility in most industrialized countries in Europe is due to low infant mortality rates, high female employment, low nuptiality rate and high opportunity cost of having children. Using two measures of economic uncertainty, which are associated with labor market decisions - a production (an output) volatility measure and the unemployment rate - we examine to what extent economic insecurities affect fertility decisions. The empirical results show that both measures of economic uncertainty have a significant negative impact on fertility implying that labor market insecurities might be a significant factor affecting fertility decisions.
