Dans notre Phonologie quantitative comparee du latin ancien, 1990, nous avons presente, entre autres, une analyse statistique des occurences de phonemes (vocaliques et consonantiques) et de sequences consonantiques figurant dans deux corpus, un corpus latin atteste et un etat plus ancien de ce corpus, reconstruit grace aux methodes et aux resultats acquis de la grammaire comparee des langues indo-europeennes. Dans la premiere partie du present volume, nous proposerons la serie algorithmique probable des changements phoniques qui ont fait aboutir le systeme du corpus reconstruit (CR) a celui du corpus atteste (CL) et nous indiquerons l'impact quantitatif de chaque changement sur le systeme en voie d'evolution, y compris les variantes morphologiques. Dans la seconde partie, nous presenterons une vue d'ensemble des changements numeriques, comprenant trois volets: les segments vocaliques, les segments consonantiques, les sequences consonantiques, et nous terminerons par une synthese des changements dans l'optique de l'economie linguistique et par une conclusion d'ordre epistemologique: l'evolution phonetique du latin reflete-t-elle le principe d'economie mis de l'avant, entre autres, par A. Martinet et, plus specifiquement, y a-t-il lieu de rattacher a un rendement eleve plus ancien une conservation ou meme un accroissement de ce rendement et, a l'inverse, d'attribuer a un faible rendement anterieur une diminution des occurences ou meme l'elimination d'un phoneme ou d'une sequence consonantique ?

"The Celtic languages and groups called Keltoi (i.e. 'Celts') emerge into our written records at the pre-Roman Iron Age. The impetus for this book is to explore from the perspectives of three disciplines--archaeology, genetics, and linguistics--the background in later European prehistory to these developments. There is a traditional scenario, according to which, Celtic speech and the associated group identity came in to being during the Early Iron Age in the north Alpine zone and then rapidly spread across central and western Europe. This idea of 'Celtogenesis' remains deeply entrenched in scholarly and popular thought. But it has become increasingly difficult to reconcile with recent discoveries pointing towards origins in the deeper past.
