Ecrire l'histoire de l'Afrique est une entreprise aux racines plus anciennes qu'on ne le croit généralement. A l'ère de l'impérialisme triomphant, cette historiographie s'est affirmée dans un paysage intellectuel, politique et idéologique que cette étude s'attache à reconstituer. En France comme dans les territoires coloniaux, historiens et auteurs variés ont ainsi exhumé des pans entiers d'un passé dont on a progressivement découvert la richesse et la complexité. Ce nouveau champ de connaissances né en situation coloniale mobilise, entre la fin du XIXe siècle et la décennie 1950, des énergies et des compétences nombreuses. Réseaux savants, revues scientifiques, historiens amateurs et professionnels, érudits locaux actifs dans les colonies comme en métropole conjuguent leurs efforts pour affirmer la légitimité de leur démarche et diffuser leurs découvertes. Leurs travaux contribuent à définir les contours d'un récit historique qui propose des interprétations, établit des chronologies et instaure des découpages dont certains ont survécu à la décolonisation. Bien sûr, cette histoire coloniale a partie liée avec les pouvoirs impériaux, soucieux de connaître les colonisés afin de les mieux dominer. Elle a longtemps renforcé le discours de légitimation de l'entreprise coloniale, le destin historique des peuples extra-européens étant - on s'en doute ! - d'être colonisés pour accéder à la " civilisation " ou à la " régénération ". Mais plus contrastée et moins monolithique qu'on ne pourrait le croire, l'historiographie de la première moitié du XXe siècle a aussi contribué à produire des savoirs nouveaux sur l'Afrique, à expérimenter des modes d'enquête inédits, à promouvoir des chercheurs africains et à inventer ce que l'on nomme à l'époque l" histoire indigène ". Dans les dernières années de la domination, plusieurs historiens français et africains sont également conduits à revisiter de façon critique les modèles interprétatifs dominants et à poser les bases d'une histoire de l'Afrique enfin décolonisée.

Ce cahier est principalement issu de la table-ronde Écrire l'histoire de l'Afrique autrement ? organisée à l'initiative de " jeunes " chercheurs et chercheuses en histoire africaine du laboratoire " Sociétés en développement dans l'espace et le temps " (SEDET/CNRS) de l'Université Paris 7-Denis Diderot. Les contributions rassemblées s'interrogent sur la construction et le renouvellement possibles du savoir historique sur l'Afrique subsaharienne, spécialement en France. Au moment d'un inévitable renouvellement des générations, un certain nombre de questions réapparaissent dans un contexte idéologique et scientifique différent : celle des rapports entre écriture, enjeu et fonction de l'histoire de l'Afrique ; celle des relations entre historiens du Nord et du Sud ; celle de la circulation et de l'adaptation des savoirs. Dans une première partie, les auteurs reviennent sur la prégnance du moment colonial et sur la nécessité de dépasser un certain nombre de blocages et de résistances. À partir d'exemples variés (la traite et l'esclavage ; les intellectuels africains ; les Colonial Studies) se dégagent des perspectives renouvelées de recherche et d'écriture de l'histoire de l'Afrique. Des itinéraires historiographiques composent la deuxième partie. Ils examinent les rapports entre écriture de l'histoire et construction nationale et posent la question de la fonction sociale et politique des chercheurs à partir d'études de cas portant sur le Burkina Faso, Madagascar, le Gabon, l'Afrique du Sud, ainsi que sur la diaspora africaine en Amérique du Nord. La troisième et dernière partie propose une réflexion plus épistémologique qui, en s'interrogeant sur la circulation et l'acclimatation des savoirs entre les continents et les disciplines, aborde la question de la place de l'histoire africaine en France et de ses rapports avec la production anglophone. Les articles de ce cahier ne présentent pas une vision unique et uniforme d'une " autre " écriture de l'histoire de l'Afrique, mais reflètent des voies multiples - et parfois discordantes - de l'appréhender. Ils montrent ainsi la nécessité du questionnement et la fécondité des réflexions en cours.

At the Second World War’s end, it was clear that business as usual in colonized Africa would not resume. W. E. B. Du Bois’s The World and Africa, published in 1946, recognized the depth of the crisis that the war had brought to Europe, and hence to Europe’s domination over much of the globe. Du Bois believed that Africa’s past provided lessons for its future, for international statecraft, and for humanity’s mastery of social relations and commerce. Frederick Cooper revisits a history in which Africans were both empire-builders and the objects of colonization, and participants in the events that gave rise to global capitalism. Of the many pathways out of empire that African leaders envisioned in the 1940s and 1950s, Cooper asks why they ultimately followed the one that led to the nation-state, a political form whose limitations and dangers were recognized by influential Africans at the time. Cooper takes account of the central fact of Africa’s situation—extreme inequality between Africa and the western world, and extreme inequality within African societies—and considers the implications of this past trajectory for the future. Reflecting on the vast body of research on Africa since Du Bois’s time, Cooper corrects outdated perceptions of a continent often relegated to the margins of world history and integrates its experience into the mainstream of global affairs.

Situated along the Senegal River, the Kingdom of Waalo was the smallest of the Wolof states of Senegal, but it illustrates the broader consequences of a shift from trans-Saharan to trans-Atlantic commerce during a time of competing European, Muslim, and indigenous African forces. From the establishment of a French trading post in 1659 to the early nineteenth century, the history of Waalo was closely tied to French interests in St. Louis, popular revolutionary Islamic movements, and internal rivalries between competing royal families and provincial leaders. Stimulating Waalo's socio-political changes were the devastations and fluctuations of the Atlantic slave trade, as well as the Muslim attack on its aristocracy. Torn by internal divisions, devastated by French and Berber incursions, Waalo's institutions and its economy declined. Residents of Waalo sought their own solutions only for external agents to ruin their efforts. By the nineteenth century, the French attempted to establish a plantation economy in Waalo, culminating in their military control of the state and the Senegal valley. This newly translated study is a vital tool in our understanding of Senegal's history, its place in the era of trans-Saharan and trans-Atlantic commerce, and its development into the present. The book should be of value to African studies scholars, anthropologists, and historians of Africa, colonialism, empire, and post-colonialism.
