En 1998, tout un hiver, chaque mardi 13h20, je franchis la porte du Centre de jeunes détenus de Gradignan, près de Bordeaux, pour y proposer un atelier d'écriture. Au tout début, je n'ai qu'un seul participant volontaire, Frédéric Hurlin. Victime de mauvais traitements, sans liens ni amis, quand il est libéré au mois de décembre il reçoit le soir même un coup de couteau fatal dans un squat près de la gare. Je ne sais pas encore que j'aurai à la même place, quelques semaines plus tard, l'auteur de ces coups de couteau. Tout l'hiver, à mesure des séances, c'est l'image de la ville qui s'inscrit, dite par ceux qui y sont à la frontière, ou les plus instables. Les routes, les parcours, les frontières, les mauvais rêves. Lorsque celui qui a remplacé Hurlin craque et écrit un jour, en atelier, cette phrase : lenvi de me donner la fin de ma vie, je sais que la tâche pour moi n'est plus ici, en tout cas je ne saurais pas l'assumer. Revenir à la table de travail, se saisir de ces mots et comprendre pourquoi ils ont fini par vous pousser vous-même à la limite. Un livre en résultera, "Prison", publié chez Verdier en 1998, suivi d'un procès qui ne sera pas facile non plus à vivre. C'est pour cela que le texte est suivi ici d'un certain nombre de pièces liées à cette première parution, rassemblées sous le titre "Écrire en prison", et inédites. FB
