'Madame Martin will throw back her shutters at eight...' With these words Beverley Bie Brahic opens The Hotel Eden, a book about seeing the world. She moves through – Paris, the French provinces, the American west coast – in the spirit of a flâneur, going about her daily life alert to the variety and mystery of human experience: the soup kitchens, the Luxembourg Gardens and the Latin Quarter, the refugees, works of art and areas of damage. The title poem pays a debt to Joseph Cornell, the master of the assemblage, whose 'The Hotel Eden' discloses a stuffed parrot and other objects under glass. The eye – the poem – assembles them but cannot tell their intended story. It tells a story all the same. 'On the tip of God's tongue, the bird waits to be named.' This is a book of revelatory indirections, of unexpected moons, creatures, passions, rituals and histories, of days rich in disclosures and in hints of revelation. One of the presiding spirits of her book is the Latin poet Horace, whose prayer she renders as her own: Grant me, Apollo, calm and contentment, A healthy body, a mind clear, And let my old age be spent Without dishonour nor the sound of my lyre.

Nestled in a spectacular botanical garden with stunning views on the Mediterranean, the idyllic Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc has attracted scintillating international guests for 150 years. Created in the nineteenth century as a retreat for artists and writers, Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc at Cap d'Antibes continues to captivate an international clientele as an exclusive retreat today. The tropical paradise attracted Lost Generation writers such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose Tender is the Night was set at Eden Roc. Artists--including Monet, Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, and Damien Hirst--have drawn inspiration from the enchanted setting and its lush botanical gardens. Master photographers Jacques Henri Lartigue and Slim Aarons famously captured guests splashing in the Mediterranean or lounging in the sun next to the iconic seawater swimming pool carved in the basalt cliff. The secluded resort, located between Nice and Cannes, has always been a favorite haven on the French Riviera for A-list celebrities--from Marlene Dietrich to Orson Welles, and from John Lennon and Yoko Ono to Sharon Stone--during the Cannes film festival, and for secluded family holidays, ideal for unwinding at the green and white seaside cabanas where time stands still, sampling the bar's iconic Bellinis, or enjoying creative locally-sourced cuisine. The hotel's storied history is full of romance, humor, mystery, and legend. Built on one of the most alluring sites on the Rivera, the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc is the epitome of beauty, timeless elegance, and discretion; it has been a home away from home for generations of artists, photographers, authors, politicians, and Hollywood stars.

Far Out written by Mark Liechty and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-21 with History categories.

Far Out charts the history of Western countercultural longing for Nepal that made the country, and Kathmandu in particular, a premier tourist destination in the twentieth century. Anthropologist and historian Mark Liechty describes three distinct phases: the immediate post-war era when the country provided a Raj-like throwback experience for rich foreigners (mainly Americans), Nepal’s emergence as the most exotic outpost of hippie counterculture in the 1960s and early '70s, and, finally, the Nepali state’s rebranding of itself as an adventure destination from the 1970s on. Liechty is attuned to how the dynamics of mid-twentieth century globalization--the Cold War and shifting international relations, modernization and development ideologies, the rise of consumerist middle classes, increased mobility and the birth of mass tourism, and emerging global youth countercultures--drew Nepal into the web of geopolitical, economic, and sociocultural transformations that shaped the modern world. But Liechty doesn’t want to tell the story of tourism as something that "just happened” to Nepalis. He shows how Western projections of Nepal as an isolated place inspired creative Nepali enterprises and paradoxically gave locals the opportunity to participate in the highly coveted global economy. The result is a readable cultural history of a place that has been in many ways defined by a (sometimes bizarre) cultural encounter. The author’s lifelong interest in Nepal and his almost twenty-five years of research make his account both sophisticated and empathic--but not without a touch of humor.

The brilliant, mercurial, self-mythologising novelist and journalist Joseph Roth, author of the European 20th century masterpiece The Radetzky March, was an observer and chronicler of his times. Born and raised in Galicia on the eastern edge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, his life's decline mirrored the collapse of civilised Europe: in his last peripatetic years, he was exiled from Germany, his wife driven into an asylum, and he died an alcoholic on the eve of the World War II. With keen insight, rigor and sensitivity, Keiron Pim delivers a visceral portrait of Roth's internal restlessness and search for belonging, from his childhood in the town of Brody to his Vienna years and his unsettled roaming of Europe. Exploring the role of Roth's absent father in his imaginings, and his attitude to his Jewishness, Roth's biography has particular relevance to us now, not only in the growing recognition and revival of his works, but also because his life's trajectory speaks powerfully to us in a time of uncertainty, fear, refugee crises and rising ethno-nationalism.
