He is stated to have dissected human bodies extensively; but his works having been lost, all that is known of his anatomical researches is gathered from the writings of others. To the parts which still retain them, he gave the names of calamus. Scriptorius, and duodenum, and his memory is perpetuated in the mind of every medical student in the Torcular Herophili. A contemporary of his named Erasistratus made some valuable discoveries in the poietic and nervous systems. W. Balfour, who has kindly given me permission to publish my notes and tracings. Case I.1 - Beatrice Matherson, at. 57, Single. Admitted to Ward XIII. On 80th November 1875. (the patient was very deaf, and a complete account of her previous ailments was not Obtain able.) Stated that, twenty or thirty years ago, she suffered from a severe in ammation of the front part of the neck, for which leeches were applied. Since then she has scarcely ever been entirely free from cough and Shortness of breath on exertion. She has also had frequent vomitings of blood, but not during the last two or three years. The increasing want of breath, cough, and the more recently appearing swelling of the legs, have latterly obliged her to remain in bed. Never had rheumatic fever. All medical ofiicers of health should be relieved from private practice And nothing would bring about this desirable consummation sooner than the adoption throughout the length and breadth of the land of a system of notification of infectious diseases. No member of our profession can allow with any equanimity the house of his patient, and pos sibly his patient himself, to be visited by a rival practitioner, who, let him act with the greatest prudence, must at times give rise to suspicion, and may find to his annoyance that some simple phrase or act has been so misrepresented as to give grave offence to his fellow-practitioner. The remedy for such a danger is, as I have said, the introduction of a general system of notification in Scot land, which would at once elicit from the profession such a decided expression of opinion as would compel local authorities to relieve their health-officer from the cares of practice; and by the judicious combination of districts, would secure for these officials a suitable compensatory salary. An additional check against sanitary officiousness is the phrase which has been introduced by our municipal authorities into our intimation card, putting it in the power of every practitioner to solicit or to retard the action of the sanitary authorities. The phrase N o immediate attention is required, if allowed to remain, informs the authorities that no necessity exists for their interference at that juncture; while if the word N o is deleted, then action is at once invited.
