Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, Vol. 8: Combining the Monthly Journal of Medicine and the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal; Part I., July to December 1862 The urine drawn by catheter was acid, turbid, loaded with albumen, specific gravity 1024; it contained grains of urea in 100 grains. After standing forty-eight hours it yielded abundant crystals of uric acid, and numerous sporules and strings of sugar fungus. The interest of this case consists in the rapidity, certainty, and safety with which labour was induced and completed. Under the ordinary methods, delivery could not have been counted upon in less than twelve hours, if even so soon. Coma would have persisted, eclampsia would almost certainly have returned, and death would probably have supervened whilst delivery was being expected. By the method adopted, in two hours, security was attained for the mother, relief from anxiety by the friends, and for the medical attend ants there was the pleasing consciousness of having triumphed over a formi dable disease. Nor did she, after it, appear more remarkably low and fatigued than before. Her pulse was tolerably firm, and did not exceed 120. The stomach however was more affected with severe eflbrts to vomit, so frequently renewed, that nothing for a while could be brought to remain. An opiate administered by the month be ing also rejected, three grains of opium were pushed up the rectum: and in no long time the stomach became more settled. When I left her about midnight, she had retained several spoon. Fuls of pounds, and seemed tolerably easy and composed.
